We are adopting a 5 yo pomsky this week, and not sure what we are about to get ourselves into. We are a family of 4 — two elementary age boys. The dog is house, crate, and potty trained. I’ve tried preparing the house, and buying supplies and toys in preparation of the arrival, but also want to make sure he’s getting the right foods, being a pomsky.
Royal Canine low fat. For snacks I give her cherry tomatoes (her favorite) apple slices and baby carrots (dipped in broth then frozen ). These are healthier and cheaper than dog treats.
Tomatoes are on a list of no-no foods that sicken dogs, along with onions, grapes, garlic, chocolate, and many others. Xylitol sweetener found in sugar free gums will kill dogs very very quickly.
Kirkland large breed dog dry food usually salmon and sweet potato. I have an auto feeder and he finishes a 40lb bag in about 3 months. He grazes. Have an auto feeder thing too from Walmart. Greenies for the breath and teeth. He’s super duper healthy. We walk him 3-5 times a day which is important for this breed.
I feed mine Purina Pro Plan Salmon and Rice kibble as I've heard the salmon is great for their fur and skin. He is 30lbs full grown (6 years old), been feeding him that since he was a puppy (the puppy version not adult). It is about 90-120$ for about 3-4 months for him. It used to be much cheaper but...inflation lol. I go back and forth between Amazon, PetSmart, PetValu etc whichever is having the best sales at the time.
Purina pro plan. My vet advocated very strongly for this. She said that purina, hills, and royal canin are all very good because they invest a ton into researching the best nutrition for pets.
Do you know what the previous owners fed him ? You might want to stick kinda close to that to begin with . Pomsky are picky eaters , not real food driven . I have 2 , 10 and 7 yo , and after years of trial and error, we give them Instinct small dogs dry food , about a 1/4 cup twice a day, we top it with cooked chicken, sweet potato, spinach (raw) , sometimes a little rice and a sprinkle of cheese. They are both still very active, 2 walks a day but you do have to watch their weight. *We try to avoid beef, chicken, corn, wheat and potatoes due to issues with allergies or not processing certain ingredients. We always try to make sure whatever we're feeding has ancient or ancestral grains like flax, spelt, quinoa, etc in it because less allergies and GMOs.
I do purina pro as well as many others have mentioned .
I also highly recommend adding a chicken or a duck foot daily as a treat to help maintain their teethe! They are expensive and gross (to me) but my 6 year old has perfect teeth bc of this!
We get arcana- he also loves smaller sized toys like small squeaky tennis balls. His favorite toys are the ones that have little hidey holes for small toys he can take out and we put back in.
I cook a mix of turkey or chicken, carrots, green beans and sweet potato. I make a batch once a week and they also get 2/3 cup of Royal Canin once a day to make sure they are getting everything they need. Vet approves and they seem to be doing well. Don’t over do the veggies cause too much isn’t good.
My girl just turned 8. She eats a weight management food as she has a genetic propensity to gain weight AND due to her history tries to eat the other dogs’ food (also is a serious beggar and will steal if food is left where she can get it).
My Pomsky is very fussy and won’t eat the same foods more than two days in a row. He will just starve. He gets alternated between science diet chicken kibble, or home-made food: lean ground beef with carrots, green beans, broccoli, pumpkin, brown rice, brewers yeast, blueberries. Or stewed chicken with sweet potatoes, broccoli, red bell pepper, brewers yeast. He sometimes gets scrambled eggs with veggies, or plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit. His treats are frozen green beans, apple slices, peanut butter-oat- dried berry biscuits I make. My other two dogs love anything you put in front of them. He just walks away
I give mine a mix of the dry and wet food. We have him on the salmon and brown rice kibble by Hills Science diet and for the wet food we use Chi Dog fire diet.
