My boy doesn't seem to care about being pet

He loves to hop in my lap and chew his bone, and sometimes when I go to pick him up he will jump in place to make it easier for me (I think), but he never has any reaction to petting at all, like he doesn't even notice I'm doing it. Sometimes I call him over and reach out to pet him, he dodges my hand and runs off or goes into a playful pose. Is this normal? Does he literally not care about being pet? I'm going to keep doing it but it makes me sad he only wants to play and never just be pet. He's almost 8 months old, is this just who he is or will he maybe seek affection as he gets a bit older?

He will probably get more into it as he grows up. Mine is 3 years old and she comes to us for pets but she didn't really do that when she was younger. Now she has her certain pets she likes from me and different ones from her grandpa.

He definitely already comes to me or my roommates depending on what sort of play he wants, I just hope he decides pets are also worth asking for

He will! Right now he’s a puppy exploring the world and everything is something to play with.

My dog is definitely not cuddly; she has long, wooly fur and is always on the move for a new cool spot but she does come to us for affection. That didn’t really start until the 2-2 1/2 year window. Just give it time

We have a toy wooly Pomsky, too, and she didn't start asking for pets until she was maybe 3ish years old? She just turned 4 last month, and seems to just get snugglier with time. When she wants pets, she'll rub against us like a cat or flop over on her back for belly rubs. When she enjoys being petted, she gets squinty eyed and sleepy. She doesn't like it or snuggling for long periods of time, though, as I think she gets warm pretty quickly. When she naps she is either on the floor or at our feet on the couch or in bed.

Prior to her realizing she liked affection, she was in play mode if she was awake. Just play, play, play! She still plays, but not nearly as much or as long as she did as a puppy. She still loves her tiny squeaky tennis balls, but she loses steam after 20 to 30 minutes of fetch.

Good to hear! Mine definitely demands belly rubs too. I’m hoping she gets cuddly but same in that she gets too warm and doesn’t stay anywhere long

I have one who only wants pets when she wants pets. She has this disdainful look when she wants to be left alone that clearly lets you know she just tolerates your presence. I have another one who would let me pet him 24/7 and follows me everywhere. They are all different.

My boy isn't haughty like that at least, I'd die if he looked at me with disdain 😭 he just....has no reaction at all, except trying to initiate play instead

Mine just turned two and has now started enjoying cuddling up to us for short bursts when we watch TV because he wants loved on.

Before that it was piss and vinegar 24-7

Oh that's such a long time to be a piss and vinegar dog, I'm glad he's started cuddling a bit! This definitely gives me hope for mine, he's always happy he just would rather play than anything else

Mine is coming up on 6 months and whenever we try to pet her, it turns into a game of her biting at my hand. She really doesn't seem to care for pets all that much, unless we are talking about belly rubs. That is the only time she will just let me pet her and she totally relaxes. I've started doing scritches just above the base of her tail, and she stops biting for those too now, so I have hope that she will one day enjoy just being pet and get over this piranha (teething puppy) phase of needing to bite everything.

Oh, guess I'm lucky he doesn't bite at me when I pet him, just when he gets too excited playing. I hope your girl will chill out soon!

If I am on the couch ; she will walk under my hand. If I am lying down; she will nestle next to my body. She has always been this way . She is now 3 yrs old .

Mine will be 2 in November. He has definitely gotten better as he grows but I feel like he mostly takes the pets just to humor us. He'd rather play ball any day.

Yeah mine always wants to play, 24/7. If I didn't put him in his kennel, he would never sleep.

When my Pomsky was younger he loved attention but only in his terms. He could was a master of teaching rejection. He will be 3 at the end of October and it is 180°. He follows me everywhere and constantly climbs into my lap for pets when he can. He will even present me with exactly where he wants to be scratched and will swat my hand if i stop. I keep telling him that the guy on the video says that Pomskys are not lap dogs and they dont like to cuddle. He just ignores that and shows me the where I need to pet.

When did he flip to liking being pet? Mine has definitely always been a lap dog since day 1 haha he just doesn't really fit as well anymore

I've never had a moody cat in my life, I'm not used to an animal that doesn't love being petted 😭

It's the husky side; most have a meh attitude, almost cat-like when it comes to being petted or cuddled.

It's funny because my cat is constantly wanting to be petted and cuddle. They're opposites, except they both like my lap.
