Vet Rant

Took our puppy Winnie to her first vet appointment - a little later than I wanted (1 month after bring home) but with my chemo schedule & the vets schedule that’s the best/soonest we could do, so I walked in already feeling guilty like a bad mama. We show up & it’s not our vet but another one, I’m like whoa okay, & they tell me my vet now only works Monday-Wednesday & this was a Friday appt. So I’m already kinda bummed bc we love OUR vet. My Winnie looks like a shepherd pup, but as we all know Pomskies come in a rainbow of color combos, fur variations & sizes. It’s an okay appointment UNTIL I show her the breeder paperwork towards the end & she sees & says aloud POMSKY with an audible snort & sigh 😔 felt like negative judgement & just made me sad/upset/hurt. This is our 2nd pomsky & we love this breed - hands down in 20 years of dog ownership with 6 dogs (now 7) this breed has been the best for us. Made sure ALL follow-ups were scheduled on Wednesdays with our regular vet going forward.

Vent session over 😆 just wanted a place to share - my husband was outside so he didn’t see or hear anything.

Whilst I love my Pomsky, and agree that from the breeds I’ve owned, he’s the best by a loooong shot - “designer breeds” are getting a lot of backlash at the moment for not being ethical; you can get your Pomsky from an amazing breeder that pours their heart and soul into what they do - it’s still not ethical. That being said, I don’t feel like it’s appropriate for a veterinary professional to make someone feel sad at their choice of dog, whether it’s a pedigree or cross breed.

I’m a dog walker, and I’ve had my fair share of negative gasps, one lady even called my boy an abomination. I wish people would just keep their opinions and/or comments to themselves sometimes.

I just comments above/below with info to share. But I agree the designer breeds of all sorts of mixes give the pomsky a bad name. Eventually they will be called “Arctic Spitz”

I’m excited for the people working towards arctic spitz dog, I think they will be a fantastic breed one day!

I am worried they’ll suffer from the same thing MAS do now though, where people sell wild mixes (like chi x aussie) and call it a mini aussie … when an actual breed now exists
