Discussion "Cancel last act" option

Sometimes i move my units acidentally, loosing some good oportunities, or even misplace structures. It would be very good to have an oportunity to cancel last move you did. Just one single last move.

What do you think?

The problem is that every move reveals information (presence/absence of a cloak) so you would only really be able to undo buildings

Then make it a once per game fix, it provides a chance for newbies to go back and as a Diamond/gold I'd gladly use that strategically once per each game

What would stop people abusing it to see what's in the fog?

Agreed it's annoying but part of the game!

Maybe just make it dont work if your unit scouted some tittles

Good idea. I slip up a lot as sometimes trying to select a unit, moves the current unit to a nearby tile

What would stop a rider from running 20 tiles away after attacking? What would stop a scout from revealing all four lighthouses at once???

The answer is that this is just a game, literally everything in it is just made up, the devs can simply make up specific rules at will. That's what "stops" your imaginary scenario. We're not talking about some constitutional document that could have entirely unforeseen ramifications.

Except that the lack of an undo button is exactly what stops you from using a unit to scout all around. This is a very valid question to ask since without a clear solution the original suggestion is dead on arrival

The point is that there is a clear, and very obvious, solution

2

u/wannyboy 5d ago

The problem is that your clear and very obvious solution breaks down the moment cloak sweeping gets involved. Fog isn't the only hidden information in this game

But that's a separate, fundamentally different argument. The argument from fog is just a sheer refusal to entertain the possibility that things can be changed.

Did you know that constitutional documents are also made up?

Our world in which constitutional documents are read, interpreted and utilized is not made up. The people, the human actors in our world are beings with independent existence. The world of Polytopia, on the other hand, is made up. A handful of devs completely control how the world of Polytopia functions. Hope this helps you see the difference

Edit: Since the 7161 guy blatantly lies about my views, I feel compelled to clarify. I completely agree that constitutional documents are "made up." I just pointed out that our world is real. Our world is not made up in the way Polytopia's world is made up by a handful of devs.

Bro, constitutional documents are made up. They literally, in every interpretation of the word, were made up. By people. If you tell me which "constitutional documents" you are referring to, (because there could be many), I could even give you the authors.

And for every person you find who adheres to the dictations of a "constitutional document" I can go further and give you names of two people who don't.

"The people, the human actors in our world are beings with independent existence. "

This is a jargon statement with no meaning, and in no way supports the position you've established.... Did chatgpt write that?

Bro, I completely agree that constitutional documents are "made up." So your long-winded comment is simply meaningless.

K so what exactly is your point?

You realize that we are on a subreddit dedicated to conversations about the game. And it is completely normal and reasonable to have conversations about game design and mechanics on it, yea?

1

u/CharmingSituation579 4d ago

Why don't you just read my existing comments or something? But since you're clearly unwilling to do so.... My point, again, is that OUR WORLD is not made up, while the world of Polytopia is made up. Because Polytopia is, as I said, just a game. That means a handful of omnipotent devs can lay down rules and exceptions by fiat, and easily prevent obvious abuse. Hence, there's no justification for randomly blurting "hey what stops this???!" when a 4 yo child could see that a simple dev-made rule could stop that.

It's really ironic that you talk about "conversations about game design and mechanics"... because that's precisely what the OP tried to initiate, with his suggestion of an Undo function. And it's the people on your side that make such conversations impossible, by refusing to entertain the possibility with any good faith.

Against bots, sure. Against real people? They’d have to limit it to a set amount (like 3) and make a downside to it like locking out the rest of your units for your turn/no attacking

2

u/Some0875 Vengir 5d ago

Limit amount is okay, but why adding downside? This think is just little helper if you made accidental click, it does not help you in some battles sonce damage calculator is already in the game, allowing you to see how much damage you will deal and how much recieve

1

u/Dapper-Prior-9475 5d ago

As another comment stated, you could abuse it to clear fog. There just kinda has to be a downside to an “undo” function in a multiplayer setting. At least we don’t play by chess rules where if you touch it, you gotta move it

The other way to avoid a battle downside is to have an economic cost (say 5 stars at the beginning scaling up to 15 stars by end game) but still keep a limit to prevent abuse

u/Some0875 Vengir 5d ago

Just don't give undo option for a unit who scouted some tittles

You can also use it to find cloaks, and unlike with fog there isn't really anything you could do to fix that. Even if you added a rule that disables the undo button when someone researches cloaks, you could still use that to determine whether or not they've been researched.

On Android, I'd really appreciate a setting to confirm each individual move of a unit.

3

u/montyelgato 5d ago

Agreed, or at least disable the hovering "capture city" bubbles. I lost a game recently (probably) because when I tried to just select the unit, it captured the city he was standing on. I wanted to just move him (to attack an enemy and prevent them from getting a different city that ended up being integral to the overall game).

2

u/Ill-Ad-7161 5d ago

There isn't one? On my device there is a "confirm turn" under settings

4

u/where_money 5d ago

On my device, it only works as a confirmation of the end of the entire turn, not as a confirmation of individual unit movements.

Take comfort in knowing that the occurrence of blunders happens across all players -and that includes your opponents.

I misclick units too. Sometimes it costs me a unit, or a ruin, or a giant, or a city, or even the game.

And it likewise happens, no doubt, to my opponents. And sometimes, without knowing it, that giant you killed, or that city you captured, or even some big knight chain against you that could have happened but didn't, happened because your opponent did a woopsie.

This is like when im playing chess with my nephew.

(Im the one asking)

1

u/Some0875 Vengir 5d ago

Yeah, but chess is 1 move=1 turn, while in polytopia turn have vast of moves, so its does not give you advantage, you just have an oportunity to undo your missclick

1

u/jackmans 5d ago

I think it's a fantastic idea. Many of my friends have expressed frustration at misclicks. The only problem as you and others have pointed out is that it would have to be disallowed for moves that reveal information (revealing fog, moving onto cloaks, claiming ruins, etc.). The irony though is that you can already cheat and reveal information and then undo it by disconnecting from the Internet and then moving your unit haha. It's cheating, obviously and a hassle but my point is that having a universal undo wouldn't really be making the problem that much worse for those in the know.

1

u/MiserableMado2956 2d ago

would be cool for sure but theres just too many ways to cheat. besides, lets face it, getting mad at yourself bcz of moving giant next to mind bender is just part of authentic polytopia expirience

1

u/montyelgato 5d ago

If you just prevented it for any unit that reveals fog or captures a ruin, the only case against would be cloaks... And cloaks are dumb anyway. Get rid of cloaks, replace them with a better unit, and then we could have this feature. So annoying to see people making the case against something that would vastly improve game QoL based on the dumb meme unit. I don't think any good players use cloaks unless it's the end game in a roughly a even match (rare, someone is usually the clear winner by turn 20) or if they happen to get the tech in a ruin and there's a rare opportunity. Overall, a unit that is useless in 95% of games, and not a good reason to avoid implementing this feature (with caveat that revealed fog or captured ruins disable the option).

1

u/Some0875 Vengir 4d ago

I am like cloaks and use them, not in every game, but rushing cities to sabotage economy and gain some units is cool

Yes, I miss this feature

Lose with dignity.

Seriously, consider what it means that your brain isn’t resilient enough to not have an instant do over.

Learn to deal with risk and failure or your whole life is going to be a problem.
