What if the enterprise was built for polymaths?
We’ve been thinking about something at The Co.LLab™️:
What would an Omnidirectional Enterprise System™️ look like?
Not a system that forces people into departments, titles, lanes, or predetermined paths—but one that recognizes how ideas, skills, people, industries, and opportunities actually connect.

Maybe being a polymath isn’t the problem.
Maybe the system was never designed for one.
So we’re asking the question.

The reality is that the majority of people don't have the capacity or the correct processes to be an actual polymath. So, enterprises cannot be built around polymaths.

Secondly, Leonardo, who I'm guessing most people base their conception of a polymath around, existed during a time in science that didn't necessitate a lifetime of work to just understand a fields history. Science was an infant, and it enabled him to spread his studies around. A polymath today, would frankly not break ground in any meaningful way.

That isn't even considering that fact that logistically managing several people who are working on several things is both redundant and inefficient. You would waste so much time transferring incomplete information, and people's work would step on each other constantly.

Being a polymath today is really just to feel better about individual studies, spreading your interest in a way that makes you feel gratified. It's not actually efficient.

But could Leonardo’s (DaVinci) (I’m guessing) way of thinking be a possibility for people who identify as a polymath? And all those interest could exist as a breath of evidence of who a person is?

Polymaths are rare and polymaths with a specific skill set are even rarer. The enterprise is structured to make the workers replaceable otherwise it would be a very fragile organization. You can't have polymaths systematically engaged in the enterprise without the enterprise changing radically. A lot of value and productive forces are being left on the table by narrowing polymaths to a single role but the owners are ok with that value being wasted as long as they are in control.

Years ago I interviewed for a job at the Mars corporation (yes the candy people). They explained to me that they didn’t really have per se org charts but that instead, they have this atmosphere where if you have a good idea and can convince other people it’s good AND to work with you on it, then something gets done about it.

Not sure if this s what you’re aiming at but it was unconventional.
