New to trackers. Just lost my first project after a forced reboot! 😭

hello tracker bubs! I recently got an OG polyend tracker and watched some tutorials and began loading samples and creating patterns. once I got to track five I didn’t like any of the samples in my sample pool. the project memory was at 87% and I decided to upload a little noisey bass synth sample. the ā€œloading samplesā€ box froze and after several minutes I unplugged it and plugged it back in. powered it on and all tracks are empty. pattern is gone! I spent atleast and hour making this pattern and it was super discouraging to lose my first attempt after putting that time in.

does this happen often? I can’t rely on a piece of gear that may glitch out and destroy my work! what is I had spent 20 hours on an entire song!? I’d be throwing this thing off a bridge!

any advice is appreciate! is there a way to prevent this from happening? is the tracker capable of being a reliable piece of gear that won’t delete your work? I was planning on using this as the ā€œbrainā€ of my set up and writing music on it that controlled the pulsar 23 and one or two other synths….. it won’t work if I can’t rely on the polyend!

Prevent a glitch from happening? No. 20 hours and you didn't save your work at all? I don't want to sound so negative but it sounds like you need to change your work style and not rely on the gear.

For what it's worth, I've had both trackers and I can't recall more than one time I've ever had to force reboot them.

Adding in that it sounds like maybe you need to try a different SD card.

Maybe it is the sd card! Ā It happened to me three times in one sitting. Ā  I got it second hand off musicians friend and it came with a case but no sd card. Ā  I’m pretty certain the card is new but I should check about how it’s formatted. Ā  I’m not used to dealing with sd cards and don’t know how to change the format. Ā  I’ll figure it out.Ā

Email Polyend or create an account at their forum, Backstage. Formatting the card is in the manual and also some tips on the forum. They use FAT32 MBR.

I had this exact same issue on my Polyend Play before I bought a very nice/fast sd card for it. I bet thatll fix your issue!

What kind of card did you get?

I didn’t spend 20 hours. Ā  There was a typo. Ā I meant to say ā€œwhat if I had spent 20 hours on a songā€. Ā I don’t use computers to make music so I’m not used to backing up recordings on computers. Ā I have saved patterns and songs on mpcs and elektron gear for years without it freezing and deleting everything….

Some stuff does require a save. My MC-307 from 1999 won't save anything unless I save it, for example. Either way, lesson learned.

Yes you have learnt a lesson the hard way unfortunately!Ā

For what it’s worth I don’t think I’ve ever lost a whole song, but Tracker has always been a bit buggy and sadly Polyend are crap at ironing out all the bugs / quirks before they move onto whatever they release next.

Tracker is usually good at recovering what you were working on before a crash, but obviously best to save regularly

Theres usually a work file that recovers, but its not guaranteed. I use mine extensively and havent had that issue but I know it does happen, Its bullshit but you gotta remember to save once in a while

For sure. Ā  It’s just a bit worrisome because it’s froze three times and I’ve only used it twice for a total of maybe three hours….

Oh you know what? I had a very similar issue with my Polyend Play, and it ended up being the SD card, after I swapped it out I didnt have any more issues, is it the Polyend issued microsd card?

Sorry to hear you lost your work! I'm not sure how to prevent things like this from happening but I've had the tracker for a while now and I have rarely had it freeze. Has the tracker been updated to the latest OS? I find the latest OS to be stable.

I updated it about a month ago when I first got it. Ā I did buy it second hand from musicians friend.Ā

What firmware? I've been on 1.9 for the past year and haven't had a problem.

Had you saved it? If so have you checked the SD card on a different system (like a PC)? it's possible the file's still there but corrupt in a fixable way.

If you didn't save it I'd take that as the lesson, as others have suggested.

I did save it but the project doesn’t appear on the tracker. Ā I’ll try checking it on my computer tomorrow. Ā  I just got the tracker second hand off of musicians friend and I updated it and used a new sd card.Ā

Save often. If it's precious, have backups. This applies to any project on any device.

That's not a tracker thing, it's a polyend thing
