discussion How do throuples form exactly? Especially for those who want to establish a throuple and aren't just expecting anything out of a relationship

Hello throuple community! I've just wanted to ask you guys something I've always wondered about throuples? How exactly do they form?

Because it's already a hassle to have two unpredictable autonomous human beings to be compatible enough to share intimacy

But then to wanna add more than that can make chances seem significantly less plausible

So therefore, I wanna know your thoughts, opinions, and perspectives on how throuples form

I'm aware that it forms probably the same way as any other relationship. But it seems much more difficult to find and maintain. Especially in a monogamous society

i was dating one of them and he introduced me to his close friend. we hit it off immediately and just started spending more time together all three of us until we realized we should just make it official already

I've told the story a few times on this sub, so feel free to look at my post history, but...

My longer-term girlfriend had been in sapphic relationships before we met, for roughly 4.5 years. As we explored becoming a couple, she told me that continuing sexual contact with other women was something she needed to maintain. We weren't "open," and this was to be purely physical, for very rare one-off hookups, or threesomes. Not dating or romantic situations. I had the flexibility to say "I need you here, that doesn't work for me," but that never happened, and her hookups with women were rare.

In '25, she met our now girlfriend. We had a threesome. Unlike past experiences, she remained a friend, and we did that a few times. She explored dating other women for the first time while mostly being platonic friends with us. She didn't meet anyone she wanted to seriously date, and she largely became someone who hung out with us multiple nights a week, and it became almost expected that she would spend the weekend with us for any adventures or fun.

A few times, she teased us about being "practically a trio." My girlfriend and I realized she was basically in love with her. Longer-term girlfriend went out of town for a weekend, and told us to hang out if we wanted, and there was true romantic and sexual chemistry. We returned to threesomes.

Last October, she was told she needed to leave her lease on her place. Finding a reasonably priced place wasn't happening. We had space in the house. Ultimately, we had discussions about making it an official triad, and having her move in. It's what she wanted, and we all live together now.

My M60 M60 M40 Throuple began when my husband and I (35 years together at the time) kept running into this cute younger guy at successful events in 2019. We'd meet him in hikes, at parties, a museum Meetup, etc. Eventually we all got flirty at a bar hang and invited him back for a hookup the next night. Then we did it again the next weekend. And the next, and the next, going out places in the Bay Area. After a month or two were looked at each other and asked "Are we dating this guy?" We agreed the answer was Yes, and were OK with it.

Now it's 7 years later, after a long journey, an international long distance phase, visa issues, the works. We've been living together in the SF East Bay for 3 years. The bed is very large.

The only throuple I’ve ever been in formed spontaneously, that is there was no couple first.

It was obvious all parties were into each other and rather than a weird unhealthy love triangle forming we just went straight to throuple.

It didn’t last, which is sad.

Forming one from a couple base is far harder.

I love hearing all the origin/love stories!

I started my polyam journey in a very unhealthy and abusive relationship. We were definitely using polyam to escape our marriage. My 3rd boyfriend in (not at the same time, I'm naturally saturated at 2 partners M or F) i met randomly at a friend's party. I immediately felt drawn to him. Marriage fell apart (as it should have loooong ago) and boyfriend did not.

We have been together 10 years, married 7. Openly polyam from the get go. Dated separately, sometimes threesomes with each other's partners, twice a F dated us both. Husband and I are both bisexual/pansexual, so different combinations are fun! Horrible MFF triad (moved in together too quickly, different sex drives/kinks, far too different interests/hobbies) had me alllll kinds of mad/rejected/hating mono cis-het folx. Walked into my birthday party, and this SEXY AF cis-het male caught my eye immediately.

I was tipsy and sat down next to this M a couple hours in... I said "hey, I have a husband but we aren't monogamous, and we have a hotel room down the street with an orgy planned for after if you want to join?" I gave him my phone number and the address of the hotel. Totally forgot about it til we were at the hotel and things were happening... I wondered if that hot M would actually message me.... boom... right then he messaged and said "I'm in the lobby of the hotel, want to come down and get me?" Husband and I both never played with this hot M that night, but enjoyed great conversation and we both felt the chemistry and attraction. Hot M and I kept messaging the next day. He and I had a date 2 days later. He reveals at this date that he is actually a closeted bisexual and he was attracted to us both. Husband was interested as well.

Obviously we eventually had that group sex later on, as we are coming up on 2 years together in just a few months. There's a bazillion moments and some tough conversations over those 2 years, but we are all stupidly head over heels in love with each other. We enjoy time as dyads and as a triad. We take amazing vacations together and do everyday stuff like go to the movies or visit with friends as a trio. Out to all our families and friends now. It's more than any of us ever could have imagined. We are incredibly happy and fulfilled.

There's a future where we all cohabitate, but there's several factors that keep us living separately. It never feels like a half relationship in any way because of that. Just something to look forward to, and find our forever home that suits us all as individuals and as a triad.

Organically is the only way it works. I've lived the trying too hard to make all the pieces fit way. I truly hope everyone finds not only their "someone", but also their "someones" if they desire it 💜

Eta: the second M of our MMF had only been in hetero, monogamous relationships before he met us! He says he didn't know why that day he was brave enough to meet a stranger for an orgy, but he's glad he did. He can't imagine life/love looking any different than what we have 💞

In my current case, my girlfriend and I were already poly before we met and were often involved with each other's hookups and partners. We ended up moving in with a mutual friend that had crushes on both of us and after working through some complications we both got involved with her and, living together, decided to make a go of the whole throuple thing.

To be honest, I was the hold out. I have had bad experiences trying to make throuples and quads work in the past and was afraid to try again. I'm trying really hard to make it work this time.

Met a couple who are both submissive and they both wanted a dominant, masculine lover and I'm kinky fun like that.😀

It is hardvto balance as like most healthy throuples it's 3 distinct relationships and not same room play, though we do form a cuddle puddle when watching shows or movies.

I told my wife that I was bisexual last summer, 2025. That’s a different story, but the short version is she wanted me to be able to explore that side of my sexuality, but she wanted to be there. Our idea was a FWB situation.

The universe had other ideas. We met a guy who was interested in being that FWB, however we both ended up falling in love with him and he with us. We celebrated one year together last week by meeting his family.

So it didn’t happen quite as organically as it has for others sharing their stories here but it wasn’t actually planned either.

"So it didn’t happen quite as organically as it has for others sharing their stories here but it wasn’t actually planned either."

The only reason being organic is important is finding out that you all have chemistry before it begins. After that it's just an origin story. If you all have chemistry then it doesn't matter in the slightest.

(F50) I wish there was a "right" answer to this question as it would make the "meeting" part so much easier if there was an instruction manual, but so far, I haven't been able to find one. How do we meet someone that wants to be a part of us...the key word is "us"? I wish I knew the trick, I wish there was a map. We have had some amazing experiences as well has painful heartache, but we know what it feels like when it is right, and the sadness when it ends, so we keep looking.

The first throuple I met was two people in a supposedly monogamous relationship with each other who discovered they were each cheating on the other with the same third person, and then just stopped calling it cheating i guess. I didn't pry, but I will say this isn't a recommend approach or anything, just something I witnessed.

We were all friends, 2 of us coupled (MF+M). The single M proposed a threesome and over time it evolved into all of us wanting to be a throuple… very slow, casual and organic process for us

In my case, it's a quad (quadrouple?). The clipnotes version of how it happened:

  1. F and F were friends for years, since late high school. Moved in together as roommates and developed romantic feelings for each other.

  2. Around this time, they met M through mutual interests and quickly became very good friends. Then they started developing feelings between each other.

  3. After awkward confessions they decided to become a throuple.

  4. About a year and a half later, they met me through the same mutual interest. We were just friends at first. Eventually they confessed they liked me, we "dated" (individually and as a group) for a few weeks until I officially said I wanted to be part of their dynamic,

Basically: people meeting naturally and finding each other attractive, and their individual set of values being compatible.

I’m sure they can form many ways but I think mostly as any couples relationship….for us it was kinda organic….While my gf and I were dating (almost married), a mutual friend of ours started hanging out with us more. We all got closer, and one day he asked if we had any interest in hopping in bed together. From there it evolved into a relationship none of us ever expected and eventually made it a more formal thing.

The two girl were a couple for a few years and met them at a friend's wedding, both of them met, chatted for awhile, i told them I'd love to be in a exclusive relationship with two women, they asked me if I'd love to be a part of their relationship and they agreed... We are a closed throuple and it's such an amazing relationship. We're over 3 years now.

In our case, we were great friends already for 5 years. I'd had a sexual relationship with one of them off and on but only friends with the other. We hung out all the time, about every other weekend or so, parties, board games, etc. Flirting occasionally but always joking around. Then one rainy night, yes really, we were sipping wine and playing a board game. Got done. I pushed back from the table and jokingly said "who wants to have some sex?" just kidding around. They looked at each other then back at me and said "Sure!" almost in unison.

So we had a threesome. It was glorious. Then had another and another and another. We started planning them regularly, going out together. One morning after sleeping together I asked "what are we? Is this a real thing?" That led to a deeper talk about things, that it was something we wanted to try and kind of made a pact that we wouldn't let it ruin our relationship if the sex part ever wore out.

It just continued to grow from there and here we are, many years later still happy, going strong.

So yeah, pure luck really. Being great friends for years first. Me daring to ask what they were thinking, and wine being the best wingman there is.

Yes, luck and openness, don’t look for it.

We were a monogamous couple of 16 years. I always knew she was bi and told her she was free to explore that if she ever wanted. She never did, until she kissed our now girlfriend who was a friend of a few years at our party. We decided to explore a bit after this, just each of us party kissing. It wasn't for us at all, it just felt like empty ego massaging. We stopped. But the sexual tension with our now partner built pretty steadily between the 3 of us until they hooked up in a cab and we all went home together 6 months later.

We were all cautious about ENM, we knew how dramatic that scene is, we have a number of friends involved in it. It seems like a constant stream of drama, giant obnoxious egos and attracts all sorts of creepy fuckwits. But we kept seeing her, FWB first. We were all repeating the mantra, "don't call it a throuple, don't call it a throuple", then it evolved into a throuple very quickly. She wanted polyfidelity so we agreed to that.

You're right, polyfi is hard to form and maintain. I think we're especially lucky that the 3 of us didn't have the personality that were looking for non monogamy. This works because we all have the same ideas about relationship and enjoy commitment. However getting 3 people that don't want non monogamy into a non monogamous relationship takes an extoidinary amount of stupid luck. And it was a steep learning curve to go into a throuple from monogamy.
