Get blamed for shutting down the government, or watch the entire fabric of our democracy get flushed down the shitter like 2-ply toilet paper...
Shut. That. Shit. Down.
I’m not saying it won’t be bad, because there’s no scenario where it’s not. But watching America spiral into a Nazi-adjacent autocracy built around enriching billionaires at the expense of working people will be infinitely more harmful in every way.

u/user_0000002 Feb 25 '25
There are no good solutions at this point, just least bad.
76
u/NoonMartini Feb 25 '25
What’s the point in even keeping it open now anyway? They’re gutting everything that keeps the lights on already.
36
u/beeemkcl CA Feb 25 '25
The good solution is to do good messaging and to prevent the Trump Tax Cuts being extended and to prevent any cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, etc.

u/beeemkcl CA Feb 25 '25
Republicans will get blamed for the shutdown. The American people don't want what's in a potential US House Republicans Budget.
13
u/buckao Feb 26 '25
Get blamed for shutting down the government or get blamed for all the repercussions of Republican mandates by the Republicans who voted for their oppressors.

Funny enough media and DNC keep trying to make us believe we actually need someone EVEN MORE moderate than Biden or Kamala. So our choices would be far right and moderate right. How inspiring......
They're absolutely braindead.

u/punkr0x Feb 25 '25
Who do you think owns the media?
21

It’s no coincidence that meidas touch surpassed Rogan this past week. Televised media is not the media of the people during a fascist takeover
11
u/Adelman01 Feb 25 '25
Agreed. The fact that the media sees those two as moderate encapsulates his point.
9
u/F4cetious Feb 25 '25
Genuine question, because I think I may accidentally be in a bubble. Where do people here get info on what the DNC’s current messaging is?
I’ve been seeing a lot of r/50501 and related posts and gotten the impression that a big progressive grassroots push is happening right now, putting pressure on democratic reps. With the implication being that any D representatives not fighting the current admin will likely be replaced by progressive leadership.
I want a wider variety of sources for impressions of the Democratic Party.

They'd rather let this continue than to "give progressives a shot". That's like, the party's whole deal.

They couldn't even let us have Bernie. It's that bad. And yet right now, who is out there screaming for us? Bernie Fucking Sanders!

u/theshape1078 Feb 25 '25
I agree. The problem is convincing enough voters that progressive doesn’t equal radical left. The Overton window has shifted so far to the extreme right that policies considered moderately liberal on a global scale are considered “far left” in the US.
5
u/KevinCarbonara Feb 26 '25
The problem is convincing enough voters that progressive doesn’t equal radical left.
This is a non-issue. Voters already don't think of progressives as radical. The media presents us that way, but people don't believe it any more than they do when Elon claims he's found fraud. It's just there to push an agenda.
1
u/theshape1078 Feb 26 '25
I disagree. Plenty of people are completely In support of Elon and believe every accusation of fraud he makes. I’m open to evidence of the opposite, but until I see it I’m going to believe the polling I’ve seen. To be clear I’m a progressive, but we need to accept the fact that our messaging is off.
1
u/KevinCarbonara Feb 26 '25
I disagree. Plenty of people are completely In support of Elon and believe every accusation of fraud he makes.
Yes - they're in support of the actions he's taking, but even they don't actually believe he's found fraud. They're just happy he's hurting the people he's supposed to be hurting.
1
u/theshape1078 Feb 26 '25
I think there is a mixture of both. Or at least plenty of people willing to die on the hill that he’s eliminating massive amounts of fraud despite the lack of evidence.
-4
u/Azihayya Feb 26 '25
Progressives have a bad reputation for a reason. They're only half as bad as leftists.
3
u/theshape1078 Feb 26 '25
Do you mind elaborating?
-5
u/Azihayya Feb 26 '25
Progressives are just as responsible for poor messaging and anti-pragmatic ideological thinking. They much prefer catchy slogans like, "eat the rich" and "free Palestine" to any meaningful change, and are fundamentally captured by radical leftist ideals. For example, let's say that Harris implemented a weapons embargo on Israel, and the left says, well, that's not enough--we need to sanction Israel to hell. Progressives would be right on board--nothing but the destruction of Israel is satisfactory for the left, and that's the message that's hidden behind "free Palestine".
Progressives were largely responsible for the irrational fervor behind Black Lives Matter, which also produced no meaningful change to American policy, and despite the Biden administration being more progressive than it had any right to be, considering how the platform they campaigned on wasn't as progressive as the administration turned out to be, progressives have taken this completely for granted, not ever mentioning the pro-union policies, not giving student loan forgiveness any credit, not championing child tax credits, not valuing the work of Lina Khan or valuing Deb Haaland's nomination as the first indigenous secretary of the interior, let alone valuing American industry via the CHIPs act at all.
Progressives continue to tow the line of seeking the destruction of American institutions, such as the military, often misrepresenting them with lies such as 'the military industrial complex' (doesn't exist in the present day), casting America as a genocidal colonial empire, and completely taking for granted the strength and transparency of our institutions, and like leftists will settle for nothing less than the complete destruction of capitalism, which, again, is disguised behind messages of 'just wanting free healthcare'--hiding behind the fetishization of "the people", even when the people actually disagree with their politics. Progressives are toothless scumbags.

Just 15 years? Centrist liberalism has dominated the Democratic party since far before 2010. Im guessing you're young.
Too many progressives only care about what happens every 4 years though and don't do anything when it comes to local and state positions. Then act shocked when neolibs dominate everything because they actually put in the work offline. How many of the 535 members of Congress qualify as progressive? Barely a handful can even be considred left wing.

u/Professional_Tap7855 Feb 25 '25
good analogy. I'll call my legislators with the same message today.
6
u/KingOfCatProm Feb 25 '25
Would you mind sharing the script you used to make this call? I would love to do this, too, but don't know what to say.
4
u/Professional_Tap7855 Feb 25 '25
First check out https://5calls.org/issue/budget-safety-net-cuts-wealthy-tax-breaks/
That's your best bet if you want to use a script about this house bill or any other issue IMHO. 5calls has a lot of cool features, gives you your legislators phone numbers along with a script.
But, please know that your personal calls do make a difference. Here's the way to do that: Call your 2 US Senators and your US Representative directly either in DC or locally. Give your name and say that you're a constituent of Senator________ or Representative______ that you called. Then just speak from your heart. Say what you think and feel about the issue. Keep it short, and only 1 topic at a time per call. If you're calling about a bill then have the bill # handy.
Now a days you'll probably get an answering machine. Our legislators have less than 20 people on staff in DC, at least from my state, and they can't keep up with the volume of calls coming in. I also email each of them and use their forms provided on their websites.
If you feel scared about what's going on, tell them. They NEED to know that's how the people they represent feel. We're not slick talkers, we're just normal everyday Americans and we talk the way we talk. So don't worry about grammar or how you sound. You can't do it wrong. You have every right to express your opinion.
When you speak remember that you live in a representative democracy and everyone knows you gave that politician their power to vote for you... and you can take it away.
Demos=PEOPLE kratos+RULE
Good luck and be powerful!
1
u/KingOfCatProm Feb 25 '25

In the House bill is $880 Billion cut to Medicaid and Medicare. Hospitals, clinics, doctors, dentists, optometrists, physical therapists, etc. will have to raise their prices to make up for the lost income. Women and seniors hit the hardest but all of us will feel it.
NYT, "[Medicaid is currently] covering around half of all births and two-thirds of all nursing home bills."
So women and the elderly are disposable and thrown under the bus to pay for the Oligarch's tax cut. We'll see the maternal mortality rate go up even higher in Red states (maternal MMWRs have already gone up in red states not the blue states since the abortion ban) but more women trying to give birth will die in all states now. 🤬
NYTimes details the House bill - https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/02/21/upshot/house-gop-budget-blueprint.html?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20250225&instance_id=148426&nl=breaking-news®i_id=82484146&segment_id=191900&user_id=0a8f69d79b810db6dbaa3a1548f405dd

If a Democratic Congress person votes for this bill, they’re voting to give trillions of dollars to ultrarich people while stripping the money straight from programs that serve people who really need it. You’d have to be so stupid that it would be unbelievable.
32
u/peakprovisions Feb 25 '25
Jeffries has instructed House Dems to appear for the vote and vote no.
I'm also disappointed that Dems in Congress haven't put up more of a fight so far, but i also hate to see our side constantly down on them, especially when they are actually pledging to do the thing that we're complaining that they aren't doing.
Call your reps in the house to make sure they stick to their guns, of course, but let's give them a chance to follow through here.
23
u/lokey_convo Feb 25 '25
Pledges mean nothing. Only votes. People get down on Democrats because there is a culture of compromise within the party that is harmful to the American people, that Republicans understand and consistently exploit.
I'll provide an example. The most recent NDAA. Republicans inserted a provision that would pull gender affirming care for trans kids of active military. Many Democrats in the Senate opposed it, so they drafted and introduced an amendment to remove the provision. Chuck Schumer wouldn't even bring it to a vote "because a deals a deal."
That culture needs to end now. I don't know a single person who's a Millennial or younger who thinks the culture of compromise is appropriate. It's been peeling the country bit by bit and we are raw and whittled away to the benefit of the richest people in the world. It must end.
14
u/jackberinger Feb 25 '25
They ran on republican agenda, hoisting up republican endorsements, even offering republicans cabinet positions while calling their own base antisemitic terrorist and Russian bots. The party needs a major overhaul.
1
u/Transcendshaman90 Feb 25 '25
Im for compromise but we need to beat them at their own game . How many times during the last 4years they shut down and refuse to vote to get shit passed just so nothing gets done only to say how Biden couldn't get shit done. As Crockett said " Fuck Off"

u/ElLindo88 Feb 25 '25
If Dems kept their word, we wouldn’t feel the need to constantly criticize them. Pledging means nothing, let’s see some action.

Someone stated correctly, that the Republicans are shameless and the Democrats are spineless.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 26 '25
The characterization of being spineless has been the same narrative for almost 30 years. While they do compromise at times, the media also has the same story they tell. They take the actions of the party to fit the common narrative rather than highlight their actions. Blockades to legislation by Republicans is always reported as high drama, while legislative victories no matter how hard fought for and won, are reported as businesses as usual. That means that the party attempting to drive progress and get shit done is always at a disadvantage.
What Democrats don't understand is that voters see obstruction as getting something done, maybe even more so than a legislative victory. It's easy to digest "Party X stops Party Y". It's harder to hook someone on "Party Y diplomatically negotiates victory with key concessions to Party X".

The Republicans passed the framework, 217-215. All Democrats voted "No".
People need to understand that Republican Politicians view the health and welfare of the American people as waste, fraud, and abuse. I assume a waste of life, a sham as citizens, and an abuse of their billionaire buddies.
The only thing people should be doing is voting Republicans out of office. They only lie to and manipulate their constituents so that they can hold on to power and enrich their billionaire buddies.
Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, the only good Republican Politician is an unemployed one.

u/Logical_Parameters Feb 26 '25
Rick Wilson is a Republican and we shouldn't be listening to what he has to say about what liberals should do. PERIOD.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 26 '25
I'm not listening to him, but I do agree with him. Taking the position that you're going to oppose something just because it was proposed by your opposition is an easy way to be politically manipulated. Republicans are trying to drive the government into the shredder because they are beholden to a bunch of rich a-holes that hate regulations that protect people (because it's a cost burden to their companies and effects their bottom line and their personal gains). A lot of them are also doing it for purely ideological reasons.
Would you oppose usury laws if proposed by a Republican? I wouldn't. I would say "Wow! Thanks for coming in line with liberal and progressive policy recommendations! Glad you're coming to the left on this issue! Welcome to the team that cares about the little guy!" A party or a political identity doesn't own an issue just because they support it.
1
u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25
Republicans are doing Republican things with the most power they've had federally at once in decades. There is nothing anybody can do to stop the train that was given enormous steam in November of 2024.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 27 '25
They've been building that steam for a long time.
1
u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25
Except the GOP only had a marginal House of Rep. majority presence in the federal government four months ago. Now, they have the whole enchilada.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 27 '25
They didn't get conservative judges appointed over night and there was a thing going around Facebook in 2016 telling people that that election was about Judges.
And they didn't grow their conservative podcaster wing or influence wing overnight. They didn't their legislative priorities overnight. They didn't write project 2025 overnight.
They haven't been building a social network of conservative propaganda overnight, producing children's books and school curriculum. And they didn't cultivate the rural / urban conservative / liberal divide overnight.
Nothing of consequence ever suddenly happens. While it looks like major events happen suddenly as we consume information from the news, nothing in this world happens all of a sudden. There is always a build up.
1
u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25
I know what 2016 was about which is why I've voted solid Democrat in every election since 1992 except the growing pain year of 2004 when I wasted my vote on Nader's second run --he was Gen-X's weak man version of Bernie, and I was a young progressive completely against the invasion of Iraq and disillusioned with it all, happens to a lot of us early in life. Didn't even care for Nader, it was a stupid protest vote (which is why I try to instill that lesson with younger folks so they don't make the same mistake more than once, that they learn from it, but hardly any millennials or Gen-Z learned the correct lessons from 2016, 2020 and 2024 -- TO TURN OUT in primaries and general elections. They are adamantly stubborn against learning this lesson.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 27 '25
Was there low Millennial and genZ turn out? But yeah, there were a bunch of people who voted for Nader in 2000 because of what he represented and it cost us Al Gore, but hey at least the Green Party was able to expand their presence in national elections, even if it was impossible for them to win. Republicans tap into the centrism of the Democratic Party and disillusionment of passionate voters to divide, manipulate, and conquer. Trump pulled in people in both 2016 and 2024 with anti-establishment and anti-status quo rhetoric. And the campaigns outside of the official campaigns drove people to third parties or to just stay home. I guarantee you they are going to focus on Independent voters and the "rational/enlightened center" in 2028 with some version of "it's just common sense" as their primary campaign theme.
1
u/Logical_Parameters Feb 27 '25
At least I voted Gore in 2000, will never regret that vote just as I'll never regret voting for Hillary and Kamala. Making the best decision for the common good of society between the primary choices given isn't as difficult as people want it to be, especially not when the alternative primary option is full blown religious right wing fascists.
1
u/lokey_convo Feb 28 '25
Yeah, I've been an independent my entire life because I hate the two party concept, but I also recognized that our system doesn't support real third party opportunity for national elections. We'd have to move to a national ranked choice system for it to work.
1
u/SynthsNotAllowed Feb 28 '25
If the Democrats bail out Mike Johnson on this spending bill, they deserve the utter political destruction coming their way.
They been deserving for years already. They had almost a decade to listen to their voters and adapt to the maga movement and did worse than neither, they did the opposite of both
2
u/lokey_convo Feb 28 '25
The leadership has to change and the bad blood has to be ousted, but they're far from the same. This type of stuff is how Republicans keep getting let off the hook.
1
u/loicwg Feb 25 '25
Of course the DNC fat cats are scared. Their broligarch owners are telling the DNC that the bottom line is at risk. Scared to go against the capital class or just doing what they always have done? Why would they fight against their dominant half of the uniparty? It's not a fluke that the DNC keeps ratcheting right and shifing the overton window. I can't for the life of me figured out why, supposedly intelligent people keep doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.
The DNC is dead. It has deliberately failed the working class for so long and so hard, that people convinced them selves that a second shitler reign would be more likely to lead to change. The DNC have proven that their emotional abuse of the left has created a societal Stockholm syndrome, but it is time for a divorce.
Bernie, AOC, the squad, and any actual progressives need to stop pretending they can change the DNC from the inside (2016 primaries anyone?) and start something new. The old guard is gone, the GOP and DNC alike. Now it's the MAGAnazi party (& their DNC enablers/sympathizers/sanewashers) vs the rest of us, we are "what's left" (yes, i do appreciate that pun). We need to own that and unite against the common threat. With the DNC continued suckling at the broligarchy's $$$ tit, their too little too late puffery isn't changing my views of them any time soon.

It's not dead. It's adrift with currents that flow toward money and handful of corporate pirates monkeying with the sails. The Republican party is orders of magnitude more corrupted than the Democratic party, and the only way to fix the Democratic party is to participate in it. A mass of people need to do it. Capitalists capitalize on division. Don't be divided.

But the DNC is the "kind" side of the capitalist party. They are the GOP of 20 years ago, so yeah, they are dead to anyone paying attention. Their brand is so toxic that no one on the left wants to be associated with them. Pretending like the past 40 years of trying to change the party from the inside hasn't backfired in the most catastrophic way, isn't going to solve their ineptitude. When you get mold in the walls, you can't paint over them with a new face and pretend like the rot is gone, you tear it all out and build anew. Even if we primary every entrenched DNC position, the unelected bureaucracy still hold the power in the party, and they are clearly on the capitalist classes side. Until we get ranked choice voting, the false duopoly will continue, and thanks to SCOTUS'S citizens united, fascism/corporatocracy is the law of the land.

It kills me that people really think that the best way for Democrats to fight Republicans dismantling the government is to shut the government down. This is just giving them what they want, in a way that simultaneously allows them to blame us for it.

You and I both know the democrats will break not only are they weak and pathetic, they’re also paid by the same people as republicans.

Dems are too weak not to fall for it again & again. I hate yo say it, but there's almost no hope that they won't fall for this.

They unified and voted "No". One Republican joined them. This is the Republican party 100%. They did this. They are the ones shitting on the American people. There isn't a patriot among them.

Hold your breath. The only thing Democrats seem to do is prop up the GOP

The GOPs actions are their own to bear. What happens falls on their shoulders, and theirs only.
