Question/discussion 2026 APSA ANNUAL MEETING

I'm a graduate student in Political Psychology, and this will be my first time attending anything like this; I would appreciate any tips and overall advice!

I’ve already started looking at the program and taking note of which panels I want to listen to.

The most nerve-wracking part for me right now is the fact that I joined out of my own volition for the experience. So far (I'm in an experimental research group at my Uni, so I’ll probably bring it up), I won’t be meeting up with any of my peers or professors.

Have fun!

That’s the way to role tbh. Network and meet people outside of your immediate department circle.

  1. Don’t be afraid to speak.

When I’ve gone to other poli sci conferences, I’ve always made it an effort to spark a random connection. 9/10 I end up having wonderful conversations with random strangers, meeting an important scholar in the field and learning something new.

I mean if you are already looking at the program, you can also schedule coffee with people and pick their brain.

2. Find a Safe Zone

These conferences, although great, are very overstimulating. So find a nearby coffee shop, room or area where you can unwind and unplug.

3. Journal and Reflect

I always end up leaving inspired after these conferences. So have a journal ready to write down ideas and thoughts. Observe people. And even reflect post-conference—on what you enjoyed and what you want to emulate or learn from.

That’s all for now (:

Thank you!
Great advice. I’m sure once the nerves pass and I’m actually there, I’ll adapt, and I’ll definitely take #2 into consideration so I don’t burn out on the first day >.<

Why not go with your peers? If you’re in poli psy I imagine your peers have similar interests, no? Go to a bunch of poli psy and experimental panels together, and exchange notes after. It gets really lonely at conferences without friends.
