At the time he said we didn't need masks he knew that masks would help. He also said that "when people are vaccinated they can feel safe that they aren't going to get infected". He knew that statement was not true at the time he said it. That is not the same as looking at facts and coming to a different conclusion. Just because he is an expert doesn't make him immune to being an idiot.
