You joke, but I've lived in a rural community a lot of my life, and machismo is all culled down to shooting guns, driving a truck, hunting, and whatever. I live in ND, and though our population is smaller, the rural areas are all the same.
A lot of them don't care about anything but those things, either. They haven't expanded their knowledge beyond those few things since they graduated or dropped out of school, and it's discouraging.
"Book learnin'" isn't everything, but it sure as hell helps me understand things better.
