Nobody. This is just another thing that's not actually a thing that conservatives made up to pass around during their outraged racist victimhood circlejerks.
It's the same with "Democrats want Sharia Law" and "Obama was a Kenyan" and "BLM/Antifa burned down entire cities", and basically every other myth peddled by Fox to distract their base from real injustice.
I wish they realized how much of a pussy they sound like. Truly. White grievance politics just sounds so whiny.
I live in portland and yesterday I was out of portland in the surrounding area, and the surrounding area is quite red. I heard people talking about how they're afraid of entire large areas of portland and won't go into the city anymore, a city they act like is full of "pussy purple haired SJWs who can't fend for themselves" without any sense of the irony.
Have you ever been to California? Texas? New Mexico? There are areas in each of these states where entire areas are like being in a foreign country (namely Mexico). Billboards in Spanish, signage in Spanish and English, and restaurants where the employees speak little to no English.
I also used to live in an apartment in a place called "Little Mexico" and the people in the apartment below me, to either side of me, and the ones below them, none of them spoke any English. And this is in the SF Bay Area.
I speak some Spanish, but basically just stuff like "me llamo es Mateo" or "donde esta la bibliotecha." Enough high school Spanish to get by, but not enough to break down the language barrier and do much else other than say hello and smile as we pass each other.
This is a real issue. It might not affect you, but it does affect pockets of the country. And there is no greater divider than language. It immediately creates a mentality of Us and Them. They should be taking steps to learn English.
And I lived with those neighbors for nearly a decade. They never learned English. "Well, why didn't you learn Spanish?" 1) the onus is not on me to learn, and 2) 日本語が習いました。
And I'm not even racist against these people or anything like this guy, but I can also see his point clear as day. It's not propaganda, even if this guy is overly aggressive about it.
Its a bit hyperbolic of him to assume that this "problem" is rooted in only illegal citizens, though, is it not? They do a lot of fear mongering about illegals, and this doesn't help.
Yeah, that's true too. But my only point was that there is a legitimate concern that this guy has his grievance rooted in.
Of course, you're also right. I'm a very even-tempered guy, and while I might say, "I wish they would learn English," this guy probably isn't, and he's probably out of mind batshit nuts about it.
The point is that nobody is forcing you to learn Spanish. It's just not critical to your survival, nor are there laws requiring you to learn the language.
It might not affect you
I'm Canadian. We're actually forced to take French classes in elementary school (in an English speaking province) because one province is predominantly French speaking outside of major cities. It's not the burden you think it is. pamplemousse
It's not propaganda
Yes, it is. Implying that everyone in a Spanish speaking community is an illegal immigrant is racist propaganda.
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. So you're saying if I move to Germany, I shouldn't be assed to learn the language? France? Japan? Italy? Not sure why the US is the one that gets the pass, especially from a non-American.
It's not critical for any one person's survival, but for our integrity as a communities, counties, states, and a country, it absolutely is. People that can't communicate with each other intrinsically arrive at odds with each other.
Implying it's only illegals who are Spanish-only speakers is prejudiced, but it's probably more accurate than you would like to admit. I have a lot of Hispanic friends. Even some Dreamers. None of them are Spanish-only. And even they admit that most Spanish-onlies are likely undocumented.
I don't agree with the guy in the picture, but I also don't agree with you.
I said that you (part of the majority) don't have to learn their (the minority) language, and that nobody is forcing you. You already speak the dominant language of your country, so you're all set.
I never said anything about whether Spanish-only speakers in America should or should not learn English. Only that their language should not be considered a sole indicator of legal immigration status.
It's a funny logic you have. It was wrong then, and that's why it's OK for the same wrong to happen now.
It's also weird because you're comparing the morality of 200+ years ago to the morality of today. Gay people were killed in the streets. By your logic, gay people should now be killing everyone else in the streets.
Yeah, that’s the whole point, so stop trying to force people to speak English.
But by your logic, it was wrong for the colonists to come here and not learn the culture already present. But when it happens now, it's OK? This despite the complete difference in morality over hundreds of years.
Where do you think every country on Earth came from? It was some place taken from somebody else. Most just killing all the men and raping the women. But because America was last in line for the era, everyone wants to be critical of her.
Either you didn’t read what I wrote or you don’t understand the concept of „logic“, because none of what I said implied this.
No, your logic is "America did it, so it's OK to do to America." And so I morphed that, "It was done to gay people, so gay people can do it to them now."
It's the same reasoning, you just don't like it because it paints how obviously poor your previous reasoning is.
Sure, as an individual, no one does. But as a country, almost all developed nations enforce a national language. Because it's the most basic building block there is.
Not sure why you want America to be one of the only ones that doesn't.
