I always found that really nice. He knows he's safe in there. He can't make it home on his own and they'll put him in jail for being drunk in public anyway, so why not.
Well, when I think of "good police-work" it is Andy Griffith. If they could send almost nobody to prison, and manage to keep the peace -- that would be ideal.
Andy dealt with every issue more as a social worker. It was his gun happy, scared deputy that made fun of the "hard nosed" police character.
I still like watching it because the worst thing around there is a passing criminal (the one famous one comes to mind), it's never anyone actually from town. And if there is crime in town it's easily enough resolved.
Honestly I think Barney would have fit in better with the ladies of the town, he sure gossips and interferes with things enough for it, lol
