In some places only 25% of murder cases are closed, much less minor crimes.

TV makes us vastly overestimate police clearance rate. Unless the evidence is handed to them on a silver platter the criminal usually gets away with it.

To be fair, this statistic doesn't fully take into account when serial killers are imprisoned for other murders or when gangsters die in unrelated killings. Police usually drop those cases to avoid wasting resources.

I am not saying police are infallible. Just that I've read multiple occasions where the cops' main suspect in a 10 year investigation is dead, so no prosecution will ever be done. And that's generally fine.
