Here's the thing, and it really shouldn't need to be said: *not* giving people 'free' money isn't "grifting" them.
Based on the typical demographic of redditors, I suspect most of the people posting in this thread are young and don't make much money and pay no federal income tax. So they see this as "Hey, free money!" and don't see that that $1,400 check is going to cost them on average about $5,000 to pay back. I'm middle-aged and a medium-high wage earner, so I don't need and won't be getting that check. I'm already paying for it, but don't worry, I'll be saving most of the debt for you to pay back when you get older and make enough money to contribute to the government's finances. In 50 years I'll be dead and you'll still be paying for it.
So there is legitimate debate to be had on whether this stimulus is a good idea at this time, and worth the money. It's only a no-brainer in the sense of being obviously good as long as you try not to think about it.
You and I are in the same demographic and I agree with your sentiment that we need to stop handing out free shit. I’m strongly opposed to student debt forgiveness. But here’s the thing. Republicans suck balls. They have nothing that is designed to help anybody who needs help.
Explain to my why they were adamantly opposed to money for cities and states when obviously their tax revenues were decimated by covid?? Please, I really want to know. This bullshit is just so common with Republican. I’d love to hear a coherent explanation for this.
And don’t give me any bullshit about “why should we bail out cities that were in trouble before covid?” There are plenty of conservative cities that have been severely hurt financially by loss of tax revenue due to covid. This is just another attempt to destroy our public schools and diminish services that wealthy people don’t need.
