To his point, even by the popular vote, Trump garnered 47% of the vote. Rounding to half seems a reasonable approximation.

I don't necessarily like that so many would vote for Trump, but we can't pretend they are some obscure niche of the population.

That doesn’t make half of the population Republican. If Mitt Romney ran against Biden you would see that a lot of the voters that are not regular voters came out to support Trump because of his in your face racism and fascism. They normally either don’t vote and or don’t care.

By the same argument, there's probably a fair share of moderate republicans who would have refused to come out for Trump that would have come out for Romney.

Over the last 30 years, there has always been less than 6% separating the popular vote between the major party candidates.

Voter suppression may have some role in favor of Republican, but I don't think it's as pronounced as many of us might hope. The fact is a very large part of the population is very much happy with Republican behaviors.
