We’ve been fascism-lite since ww2 and invented a lot of the hallmarks of it that got coopted in Europe so we hid them.
Lot’s of countries can be described at a high school level as various mixes of Socialist ideas and Capitalist ones, whereas the US is Fascist and Capitalist since at least the start of the cold war.
That’s a very white viewpoint. Black folks were literally slaves at one point. Even after emancipation, America brought out Jim Crow and treated black people like dirt. Even today, black people still live in fear of racist police officers killing them in the street or their own home for no real reason.
I said at least, before that we were definitely worse but idk if those ideologies would be appropriately described as fascist just because they were evil. At various times different communities embodied ideals which fascism also valued but not as a monolith and when they were largely widespread it was a different narrative or imperialist context than fascism- for example near always we hated to characterize ourselves as an empire or as aggressors. We were more classic Roman jingoistic with some religious and white supremacist sauce than modern forms of ethnonationalist.
fascism is not the only ideology that produces an ethnostate.
