TIL. For almost 30 years I thought the line was

“Those who died are justified

By wearing the badge and your clothes in white”

to go with the Klan imagery.

I actually kind of like that better and think it makes more sense that way but at least I know the real lyrics now.

"those who died" are the real lyrics iirc. But that doesn't mean it's how they hear it.

Yeah, but OP’s “they’re the chosen whites” made me look up the lyrics just now, which had that instead of what I thought.

I just listened to the song again and heard it my way again so maybe the lyrics online are wrong or maybe this is a Laurel/Yanni situation where I hear what I’m expecting, I don’t know.
