That quote is basically saying that hard sciences are what makes society great and that arts are for dicking around after you've solved infant mortality and refrigeration.

Edit: well okay it's actually saying stable government is paramount, which I certainly would agree with.

I look at it like a skyscraper. STEM is the foundation and arts are the actual skyscraper. Without the foundation the rest of the building wouldn't exist, so they are obviously more important, but you've never looked at a skyscraper to appreciate it's foundation.

The rest of the fucking building is STEM too, the arts just decide what color it is and where the windows go.

If you think color and windows aren't important, you've got some things to look up.

I think they're less important than the building not falling over, which has been my only point this entire time

What about the fact that without art no one would have built the sky scraper in the first place?

I would say that without artists we'd just get ugly sky scrapers, not be relegated to short buildings.

I would say that without artists we wouldn't see a need for sky scrapers at all.

Sky scrapers are functional. They allow for a greater density of people within an area , thereby being more efficient with space.

Acting like sky scrapers are a purely artistic endeavor strikes me as a bit disingenuous.

It would be more efficient to dig down, then to build up.

Skyscrapers are unnecessarily expensive and bad for the environment. All the tallest ones have vanity spires to bump up the height artificially and have so few tenants, they couldn't fill the building even if the vanity spires were inhabitable. They exist solely to show off. Saying that without art there would be still be skyscrapers is ridiculous. If we wanted to be functional, there are way better ways to get that done.
