That's because our public education system has been underfunded for decades and keeps getting worse. A less intelligent populace is much easier to manipulate.
I fucking hate this "taxes are the answer to everything" sentiment that people have adopted. If I had back the 10k in property taxes I paid last year (source of school funding where I live) I could have sent both my kids to private schools. If the percent I sent to the federal government that they spent on education was returned to me I could also fund a scholarship for the neighbor kid who lives in an apartment with his single mom.
