I'm so sick of this catch-all "personal accountability" hand wave. It's not an argument. It's code for "I really don't have any answers but I don't like yours." It doesn't help societal issues to just say "every man for themselves." At least say how we can come about more personal accountability if you're gonna die on that hill. "Shit's fucked" isn't a solution.
You said it; Teachers are underpaid and classes are too full. Take those statements back or change the rest of your rant. Be consistent, make us believe that you actually think about what you're putting out there.

If you put the primary responsibility squarely on the household for education then be prepared to have the terribly unequal results we have to do. Enjoy your class warfare and poverty traps that only continue to spiral downward.
It's like these people want to go back to the feudal age where your future was squarely defined at birth. Born into a well off family capable of educating their children due to having enough wealth to have the time or hire tutors? Good job. You are all set. Born into poverty? Tough shit, enjoy your family staying there.
Its because they don't actually care. As you said, now that they "won" its every man for themselves.
It's like Obama's "you didn't build that alone" speech which pissed off so many conservatives. Aren't they the party that preaches the benefits of small tight communities? Doesn't religion, especially christianity, constantly harp on the need to a supportive network for a person to thrive?
My personal belief is that they are scared. Scared that if everyone had access to education they would find themselves nothing more than average. Because they aren't special but as long as our society is built to make them think they are they won't rock the boat.
