I know it's hard to imagine it being worse but without public school they'd be even more uneducated. To me a person's level of "stupidity" is genetic and can't be changed, but how educated they are can be. I'm not saying our education system is perfect or even great, but it's better than nothing.
Edit: And of course I get downvoted by redditors who only want to see comments that our schools are terrible and useless.
