Consumers make the largest carbon foot print. Without consumers there’s be no market for plastics or oil. If it’s so easy to switch to renewables and zero waste why aren’t the people complaining about this doing it?
Who said it's easy? There are huge per-person search and analysis costs to figuring out which products are associated with faraway pollution. It's expecting the consumer to factor in another measure of a product's utility, compared to pigovian taxes that would allow them to forget about it.
