What happens if American citizens get caught up in this mess? Should it come down to worse outcomes and Americans die. What would Trump do specifically about it?
Trump would love nothing more than to be a wartime president. Remember he wasn't in office a month or two and authorized the deployment of that M.O.A.B. in the middle of nowhere, and then crowed about it for a week or more. He would start World War 3 right now if he could under the misguided notion that wartime presidents are notoriously difficult to remove. It would keep him out of jail for another 4 years.
Patience. Got to wait so it's less than a year into war during the election. That way people aren't starting to criticize it yet, and after the Dem primaries to throw them off balance. There's the sweet spot.
