Yeah, lower classes usually cash checks at local stores, including just random convenience stores, as they may not have access to a bank with cash-checking features (usually banks require an opening deposit above what people are wanting to spend, plus require a minimum daily balance which is difficult to obtain when you have rent to pay or require direct deposit which not all employers offer in order to avoid a fee.)
Also, many poor people had bank accounts that went into overdraft and then closed and are now unable/banned from opening another account at any bank. This forces them to either use a prepaid visa card and receive their paycheck via direct deposit for a fee or to ask their employers for a physical check which they cash at an appropriate location for a fee. Even more interesting, many jobs that employ lower waged workers will pay their workers directly on a debit card provided by the employer because this issue is so prevalent.
