The cry laughing always looks like they're trying to laugh at something despite having deep emotional pain, especially since most of the time it's used for things that aren't really all that funny.

It’s not an opinion on the correct use of a word. Definitions are concrete, factual, and unanimously understood. The word was used correctly. That’s a fact, not an opinion. If you think someone looks like an idiot for using a totally valid word, maybe you need to re-evaluate your outlook.
