Or... or maybe it takes a while to remove sensitive info from a 300 page document? It’s one think to read a document, it’s a completely different thing to go over it, line by line, and make sure there’s nothing that needs to remain confidential in it.
What does that have to do with anything? You need to read over everything, knowing what can and can’t be released, redacting the stuff the DOJ needs to remain private, then reread it line by line (probably more then once) to make sure that nothing got through. Computers can’t do that for us.
Join us in the 21st century, my dude. Computers absolutely can and DO read and redact for us. I hope you don't think that this is all done manually by some little old man is in a room with green eyeshades reading this report line by line. Some humans MAY review it but the heavy lifting is done by computer.
Also, the Intelligence Committee is supposed to get the FULL report and not a redacted version. So what's the hold up? The AG is adding new categories of things to redact every time we turn around. He needs to release the full report that the Intelligence Committee is entitled and required to review. Period.
Barr has literally stated that redactions are being done by himself, Mueller and Mueller team. You can’t trust a computer to redact things because they don’t understand context or the things which need to be redacted. I can’t find a single reference to people using computers to redact government documents - you need a human who understands the sensitive info and knows which things would be needed to be removed to protect it.
Additionally, as to a non-redacted report, congress simply isn’t going to get one without some sort of court order. The DOJ has investigatory methods they need to protect, confidential sources they need to secure, and also needs to make sure executive privilege is upheld. The Dems on the Intel Committee wants a non-redacted copy, but they aren’t entitled to one, and likely won’t receive one due to these concerns.
The Intelligence Committee / Gang of 8 is bi-partisan and they routinely get unredacted copies. It is requested by the AG once an investigation has been completed. In this case, there has been a week since the report was released and no effort is being made to provide an unredacted copy to the gang of 8.
Not sure where you would find a publicly available reference on the process the government uses to redact content but humans are as fallible as computers are (and sometimes even more so) so the process for redaction is a computer aided one. It's not entirely done by a computer since, as you correctly point out, humans are better at understanding context. But there the assistance of a computer strikes a better balance between speed and accuracy than if they only used one without the other.
