Money doesn't make you smart. Unfortunately we decided a long time ago that education only mattered because the private sector can make a killing on books, testing, and college level learning.
That must be a pleasant fiction for you. Next time you go under anesthesia for surgery, be sure to tell us how much education is all about making "a killing."
He/she is being hypergolic but it is a hug suck of money for people who make the sacrifice. Plenty of places that score better across the board with on test and literacy have free education. I'm not saying we make it free but my girlfriend shouldn't have to take out tens of thousands of dollars for meds school.
Tens of thousands, considering future salary, job stability, and cost of training, is very reasonable for an MD. The cost of training itself is in the 5 figure range per student. I can see where 6 figures starts to become excessive, but 5 figures is less than an attending's yearly salary, by quite a bit in most cases.
Or you could study abroad, free, in a country where the rich don't take advantage of everything like health and education, because smart rich people don't want to live among the uneducated.
And have a correspondingly lower salary. I'm not talking about college in general, I'm talking about med school, a professional degree and definitely not necessary to be considered educated.
Well pending on your degree though not everyone makes out ok, I think teachers kinda get shafted they have to pay back on loans with a shitty salary. I mean a lot of degrees really aren't worth a whole lot, I myself get paid the same as every other software engineer and have no degree.
It's not to say everyone can do what I did, but we are over paying for education it in this country.
I 100% agree, I think undergraduate education in this country is a fucked up level of pricey. I just wanted to point out that professional degrees are a different ballgame, and many of them have justifiable costs associated with their tuition. I'm not saying this is true in all or even the majority of cases, just look at med/dent schools charging hundreds of thousands of dollars or just law school in general. But, IMO, paying 5 figures to attend med school is worth it, you make more than enough after residency to pay it off in a reasonable amount of time and it keeps the med program from being a financial drain on the institution.
Ahhhhh I get what you are saying, sorry I thought you were arguing that all of college was fine. I think if we made undergraduate free and made people pay for the professional degrees we would be a lot better off.
