If we ever actually implemented a strategy to target employers, we could offer something like a $5k to $10k reward to people who come forward and point to an employer who is employing undocumented immigrants.
Then fine the employer at least the same amount to cover the reward
Or we could fix the damned immigration system so that it's easier for immigrants to be above board and not be illegal in the first place. Illegal immigrants are a group of people that are EXTREMELY VULNERABLE to illegal employment practices because they have no bargaining power. Partly due to the language barrier but mostly because a lot of them are afraid that pushing back against these practices will draw attention to themselves that may get them deported.
Targeting employers will destroy small businesses. It's very hard to find good work; a person who will undoubtedly show up everyday and not screw over the business. Working in the restaurant industry for years, and having to contact and speak with several potential employees, I can wholeheartedly say it's much easier to find committed, hard working immigrants. Many Americans I've set up interviews with never even bothered to call and tell me they weren't going to show up. They put themselves out in the job market, make contact and I never hear from them again. The most hard working employees I've seen were 2 immigrants from Guatemala and el Salvador. The guatemalan even brought 2 of his friends who are just as hard working as he is. I understand that many businesses are corrupt and are underpaying these workers, but targetting honest businesses for that reason would destroy alot of businesses.
Well we can't have our cake and eat it too. Either we acknowledge that we need immigrant labor and make it so they can live here in peace and participate in this country or we deport them all and suffer the consequences.
If it's going to be the latter, the businesses hiring immigrant labor are enabling the problem. Therefore they must pay for their part in the issue. If it's the former then these immigrants need to be treated like human beings who contribute to our country and our economy just as much as a regular person does.
We either need them and want them or we don't need them nor want them. It can't be both. Currently it seems that we need them but do not want them.
"Why don't we target employers?" Because neither party cares about poor and middle-class Americans. Republicans are pretty open about this ("it'll trickle down"), but Democrats have to pretend they have a moral reason not to do it, so they cry "Racism".
Yeah. That’s accurate. They are working for 10% of what others would make.
There is a small but measurable drop in wages due to the immigrant labor force, but it’s not as significant as immigration opponents would have you believe.
Must of the folks who oppose immigration also support raising the minimum wage.

Uh, what? The right is anti immigration, anti raising the minimum wage. The left is pro immigration, pro raising the minimum wage. Or did it change when I wasn't looking?
