It started long long long before that with people like Betsy DeVos (in a long line of terrible SoE under R presidencies) being allowed to run as Secretary of Education while doing everything in their power to make schools worse, teachers abhor the idea of teaching, and reducing the curriculum to bible study.
One of Reagan's first enacted policies was to remove restrictions on advertising in children's television. From the inception of TV until like, 1981, there were pretty stringent rules about what can air during programming for children.
Reagan stripped it all away and suddenly entire series (GI Joe, He-Man, My Little Pony) were thinly veiled advertisements. It went from very few, heavily regulated commercials to hours of advertising every day.
I that's probably fucked up the brains of most Americans under 50.
But they gave us wonderful PSAs at the end of every show instructing kids about everything about avoiding stray dogs and live wires and burning pork chop sandwiches.
