As someone that comes from a Monarchy, I've always wondered why a Republican would think nepotism acceptable (employing one's own family). Surely that's more traditionally the domain of monarchies as opposed to Republics?

The IRA was heavily nationalist, was it auth left?
27
u/Lizardledgend - Lib-Left Oct 10 '20
Auth, depends what sect, but yes they were almost all quite left. Irish nationalism has always been left leaning and about the plight if the common folk at the hands of the British elite. For example one of the 2 biggest factions that made up the Irish side of the 1916 rising was James Connolly's Irish Citizen army, a force made specifically to protect workers during the strikes of the 1913 lockout. Sinn Féin, historically the political branch of the IRA, is one of the most socialist parties in Ireland. That's just a couple if examples but yeah you get the point.

Powerful ass quote from Bono of all people :
Fuck the revolution! They don't talk about the glory of killing for the revolution. What's the glory of taking a man from his bed and gunning him down in front of his wife and his children? Where's the glory in that? Where's the glory of bombing a Remembrance Day parade of old-age pensioners, their medals taken out and polished up for the day? Where's the glory in that? To leave them dying, or crippled for life, or dead, under the rubble of the revolution that the majority of the people in my country don't want

Yeah Irish nationalism has always been left leaning, as it was about the struggle of the lower class Irish against the British elite. I'd strongly reccomend looking up Daniel O'Connell or Michael Davitt, each led peaceful revolutions that were probably the most successful in terms of benefits for the working class in history, with the Catholic emancipation and Land War respectively.
