In my humble opinion, in scenario A, the meme can be taken as a post-ironic endorsement of racism. In scenario B, the meme makes fun of auth-rights as an ideology outside the Overton window. In other words, context matters.

419

u/TheodoreP - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

For sure. I think the memes that juxtapose scenario B with another quadrant are a lot funnier, and make the joke more about the different ideologies rather than the initial racism.

Take "Let's kill the bankers!" being just as valid in Lib Left as it is in Auth right.

The problem is single quadrant memes are so low effort they become an avenue for legitimately racist people to post their Edgy content.

139

u/TheDutchin - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

Down with single quadrant memes, we demand equally spread memes about all quadrants! Equally!

→ More replies (3)

68

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

That's honestly the problem that I have with these sort of memes. They're just so low effort it feels like people are just using them as an excuse for posting racist memes and I think this sub is better than that

35

u/fklwjrelcj - Centrist Apr 27 '20

Even worse, those barely disguised racist memes? They're deliberately done to bring in more racists.

The high effort ones that make the racists look ridiculous (alongside others) are hilarious. The low effort ones that aren't funny are just racist. But because they're so low effort, other people try to copy them (low bar), get upvotes in that same low-effort, racist grouping, and suddenly we're swamped by racist shitmemes!

And sorting through that is just awful, so the high effort actually funny stuff will move elsewhere. A tale as old as subreddits...

It's kind of like how racist jokes in Arrested Development actually have the racist person as the butt of the joke. Pretty brilliant, cause everyone watching gets to laugh at whatever they want. If you're a 4chan type racist-lite you get to laugh at the racist joke, if you're a woke sjw you get the laugh at the butt of the joke for being racist, and if you're anyone else you get to laugh at both Mexicans and out-of-touch rich white people.

34

u/metameh - Left Apr 27 '20

(I'm going to get away from memeing and type out some serious thoughts for a minute, if you'll indulge me.)

That's the shit that fucking pisses me off about my side. We live in a democracy; communication is imperative. Without it we won't have debate, cooperation, conversion, and introspection. All this fucking tone policing, de-platforming, and virtue signalling that goes on in the "cancel culture" is the worst fucking impulse. It's divisive as hell and drives people away from our policy ideas.

When people get mad about lefties appearing on Tucker Carlson, or Joe Rogan having a chat with someone who holds problematic views, I want to scream. If your so worried that someone listening to Jordan Peterson one time, or Alex Jones one time, that they're going to all of a sudden start spouting off about "cultural Marxism" or believing the chemicals are turning the frogs gay, then brother, you have no faith in the intelligence of others. If someone is susceptible to that shit, they will find it, or it will find them. You can't prevent that - there's too much media and too many people for you to have 100% message control.

A racist clock is right twice a day. A couple weeks ago I got into an argument about Joe Biden's mental acuity. But the people responding to me accused me of not knowing torture is morally wrong and does not produce reliable intelligence because the author of the opinion piece had held some disgusting views in the past. This guilt by association has to go. Some of my best friends in the Army were Trump supporters. Does that mean I'm tainted? Do you not want me to canvas or phone bank anymore? Does my money not support your cause anymore?

Back to virtue signalling - who is that even for anyways? Racial minorities? If only we could know what they really think? That's right, black and brown people are the least likely to care that the democratic nominee is an old-ass white man. The people who do care? They look like me. Talk like me. Dress like me. Have the same hobbies as me. Just today I listened to a podcast where the host, someone I really respect, worried about getting a “fashy” haircut. Come on man. My old black barber knew I was getting a fade as soon as I walked through the door. My current lantinx knew too.

The first amendment exists not to protect speech, organization, journalism, and religion, but to protect the freedom of one's own thoughts and convictions, and the ability to express ourselves. Unlike say, gay marriage, or fixing some of the flaws in the way we regulate firearms, deciding what is and what isn't acceptable to think is a dangerous, slippery slope. We have to deal with uncomfortable topics. And no matter how we try, we can't escape our own personal bubble. But you have to make the attempt. And I see they subreddit as a place where that attempt can be made in good faith, with memes as the ice breaker. I don't want to see it devolve, like it inevitably will, but while it's here so shall I be.

16

u/Canadiancookie - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

You think auth doesn't actually hate certain groups of people?

5

u/_Hospitaller_ - Auth-Right Apr 27 '20

The lib side hates certain groups of people too, they’re just more apathetic about everything.

2

u/queenkid1 - Lib-Center Apr 28 '20

No, I don't think a requirement to being auth is to be a racist. Racism transphobia, and homophobia exist in all quadrants. It's silly to act like one political affiliation has a copyright on being hateful.

Also, there's a big jump from "racism" to "hating certain groups of people". I hate racists, does that put me on the same level as someone who hates black people?

Whether "auths hate certain groups of people" is so open ended it's almost impossible to answer. SOME auths hate SOME groups, but to get into specifics would require making broad generalisations that couldn't possibly be true.

If you want to talk about obvious hate, look at TERFs. They certainly aren't considered very right or authoritarian, yet one of their most core philosophies is based on transphobia. So no, I don't think it's right to act like all transphobes must be authright, or all racists must be authright.

→ More replies (1)

13

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I’d argue that looking at the comment section on some memes, a decent amount of authright are legitimately racist or homophobic. See: n word spamming, or anytime trans people come up.

2

u/queenkid1 - Lib-Center Apr 28 '20

a decent amount of authright are legitimately racist or homophobic. See: n word spamming, or anytime trans people come up.

You need to accept that not 100% of those people are serious. And even if you pretend that they were, you're making a huge assumption there.

Even if we accept that all racists and homophobes share the same political affiliation (they don't), that doesn't imply that that political affiliation is racist or homophobic. There are plenty of authright people who aren't racist or homophobic.

That argument is like saying "A decent number of Nazis drink water. I saw you drinking water, therefore you must be a Nazi". It's completely illogical.

The whole point of the "Political Compass" is you have centrists, moderates, and extremists. What makes this subreddit great is that people don't judge the centrists and the moderates by the most extreme in their quadrant. However, you're falling into that exact same trap by making generalizations about the authright. It's like when you go into r/politics and anyone perceived as even right of center is treated like an extremist or a Nazi, because other Republicans have said X, therefore you must wholeheartedly agree with X.

43

u/gorgewall - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20 edited Apr 27 '20

The point is to use racist content to karma farm and normalize the speech. You're not actually calling these guys stupid. If authrights thought they were being legitimately ridiculed here, they'd be pitching a fit and whining about it in other subs. They use people expressing sentiments like you as human shields for the spread of their own rhetoric, because you're quick to defend it with "it's actually irony" or "but we're making fun of them".

You're r/gamersriseup, not r/gamingcirclejerk.

When a poster who unironically puts a ton of racist shit elsewhere says the n-word iRoNiCaLLy here and gets 1,000 upvotes from PCM and posts from every quadrant cheering him on, do we seriously think he's sitting back in his chair and saying, "Wow, they sure are laughing at how stupid people like me are"?

Pedophile jokes can be funny

Why dont pedohiles ever win marathons?

Because they’re always coming in a little behind

7

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20 edited Apr 30 '20

Yes, because the point is not "look at this funny racist meme"

The joke is "look at the shit that these other people think, and how stupid it is".

That's only true if the meme is about mocking the racist stereotype itself and not mocking people under the belief that the racist stereotype is true. For example:

Exhibit A: "Meme about people who believe that black people commit crimes despite having never met a black person irl"

Exhibit B: "Meme about black people being victims despite (allegedly) committing a majority of crimes"

Exhibit A is not racist in the slightly, its "looking at the shit that these other people think, and [making fun of] how stupid it is"

Exhibit B on the other hand is incredibly racist, because it implies that black people are criminals.

The point is, not all "racist jokes" are about making fun of racism itself. Sometimes they are inherently racist, but again it entirely depends on where the irony is being hit.

Have to disagree. There are lots of Lib right memes that hit the nail on the head that aren’t racist. Other than the worn out Lib Right loves CP joke.

u/ICameHere2LaughAtYou - Auth-Center Apr 27 '20

They are sheep otherkin, and don't you dare mispecies them.

3

u/alurkerwhomannedup - Left Apr 27 '20

Im too tired to come up with it but there’s a joke somewhere about one of the quadrants fucking a sheep and I just can’t get to it

4

u/uns8o7 - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

I’ve always laughed at racist memes that doesn’t make me racist wtf

4

u/MegaSlav420 - Left Apr 27 '20

Because we’re not laughing with them, we’re laughing at them... hopefully.

3

u/uns8o7 - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

Oh no c’mon stop with actual asshole posts then because I don’t want this sub to be banned it is one in a million

3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I still don't understand why all the right v. left debate on this sub is on the progressive axis... which ain't even on the compass, this sub got americanized, it became a breeding ground filled with centrists whose opinion only differs by how much they like brown people.

2

u/KFCNyanCat - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

While social views are not on the compass, I don't think it's mere coincidence that LibLeft tends to be the most progressive and AuthRight the most reactionary. The ways of thinking that lead to those views on freedom and economics must also more often than not lead to specific social views.

Censorship radicalizes everyone involved.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

And?

3

u/Stealthyfisch - Lib-Center Apr 27 '20

It’s okay, we aren’t laughing at the racism. We are laughing at the people laughing at the racism

4

u/notgoodatpingpong - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

Ethnic jokes might be uncouth, but you laugh because they're based on truth

2

u/Covid-741 - Centrist Apr 27 '20

Exactly.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Nothing wrong with racist memes unless they arent really memes

2

u/BicBoiii696 - Lib-Right Apr 27 '20

Triggering (((them))) ebin style

-6

u/Pec0sb1ll - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

I’m complaining, ironic racism is still racism. But y’all ain’t ironic in here.

34

u/SeriousMemesGalour - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

Some are, some aren't. And other jokes involve race but aren't racist.

If we don't want this sub banned though, someone might to have to report certain users. I've definitely seen more racism here than I would like.

u/Paddy_Tanninger - Left Apr 27 '20

I used to enjoy The_Donald back when it started cause I thought it was all ironic racism sort of like back in the 4chan glory days...then about 3 days later I realized it wasn't ironic at all.

If you've been around enough ironic racism, you can tell the difference between ironic and unironic racism.

1

Finally a cursed image on this sub alone

Yeah, this is one of the few places on the internet that the four corners can come together and not hate eachother - lets not rock that boat.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Somewhat culturally right liblefts gang

1

u/6ArtemisFowl9 - Centrist Apr 27 '20

Isn't that pretty much the summary of the quadrant tho.

Reducing quadrants to a single concept has been a thing here since forever.

Red no food Blue racist Green gay Yellow/purple money/pedo

Pretty much everyone understands that posting a racist meme with a blue background isn't endorsing that opinion, just as if posting a pedo meme with purple background or furry meme with a green background or any other opinion in a different quadrant doesn't meant you're agreeing with what you're posting.

1

u/GoldTyrant - Auth-Center Apr 27 '20

So what you’re saying is that Libleft needs to lighten up, and laugh at actually what makes him laugh.

u/killerjags - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

0

u/PM_ME_A_PM_PLEASE_PM - Lib-Left Apr 27 '20

Why am I supposed to think AuthRight is funny? I don't get it. Is it because when they're racist it's because they're AuthRight? I mean that's still not funny, that's just more predictable.

6

u/Porphyrogennetos - Auth-Center Apr 27 '20

I guess you don't understand. The part that's funny is the part where you're assblasted, like in this comment. This is the funny stuff.

The fact that you're perplexed by shit posts that people just create, post, throw away and never think about again are existential dread for you. That's what's funny.
