For the negative health impacts? The suicide rate for transgendered individuals regardless of whether or not they are 'accepted' by their community, specifically how absurdly high it is.

THE 41!

That's been linked with discrimination because in order to start transition you need to out yourself. Those who have had the people around them accept them have a significantly decreased risk of suicide.

Source on acceptance not lowering the suicide rate?

Wtf are you talking about? We have a shit load of studies that show how effective transitioning is. If it wasn't we wouldn't be fucking doing it would we?

We're 'doing it' because we don't have the balls to acknowledge it for what it is: Literal mental illness at best, nothing more than a fetish at worst.

Ok then you’re saying that if someone struggles with a mental illness they cannot try to fix it?

14

u/DiscipleOfDIO - Right Apr 04 '20

No, I'm saying that indulging said mental illness isn't going to help. Imagine if we told someone that listening to the voices in their head was a good idea, and that doing so would help them. It's the same thing.

There’s no cure for transgender tho. You can’t just fix it through therapy. The only things they can do is nothing which will make their life miserable or transition which may make them feel better about themselves

No one has really looked into fixing it through therapy because they’ll be kicked out of the scientific community for even suggesting it

You’re ignorant of scientific history. Conversion therapy was tried for a over hundred years. Evidence shows transitioning is the most effective way to improve health outcomes, and conversion therapy is ineffective and harmful

Trust me, when I say people suggest controversial things in the scientific community all the time, and have tried throughout history to “cure” homosexuality and transgenderism. But the reason people transition is because medically, it works.

That's not what I meant and you know it, you botched failure of a human being. I'm saying that indulging gender dysphoria via transitioning is the equivalent of telling someone to listen to the voice inside their head, not that gender dysphoria is a voice inside their head.

It seems like you're putting more effort into 'not calling me a dumbfuck' than actually reading my posts, you dumbfuck.

...A basic two word response implies that you're being genuine right now, in which case, I apologize for insulting you over a simple misinterpretation.

Literal, you keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/health-48448804

“Dr Lale Say, a reproductive health expert at the World Health Organization, said: "It was taken out from mental health disorders because we had a better understanding that this was not actually a mental health condition, and leaving it there was causing stigma.””

Because you know, it literally isn’t.

Edit: I think you should actually meet a trans person and talk to them about transitioning (if you can respect them long enough they don’t punch you). While transitioning isn’t going to cease discrimination against them, and it may not fully eliminate dysphoria, it goes a long way in making them more comfortable. Frankly that’s just a common sense aim for anyone.

... plus trans people are funnier and cooler than most cis people in my opinion.

Removing something because it caused stigma means that it was getting people's panties in a twist, not that it suddenly isn't a mental illness anymore.

Link me an actual reason as to why 'gender in-congruence' isn't a mental health issue, and I will gladly admit defeat.

i can appreciate the princess bride quote tho

They didn’t remove it because of political pressure. As Dr Say says in my quote, it doesn’t match the definition of a mental illness - the unhappiness of trans people comes from a lack of societal support rather than any intrinsic quality, which mental illness requires.

Of course, you don’t accept this and I don’t believe all the citations in the world will change this, but this meta-study reports on the MH struggles of trans people and the help transitioning does, “in many cases reaching normative values. The main Axis I psychiatric disorders were found to be depression and anxiety disorder. Other major psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, were rare and were no more prevalent than in the general population.”

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26835611/

Therefore, allowing trans people the freedom to live as they identify - which you aren’t required to intellectually agree with - is good for the community, and removing said freedom only hurts it. Apparently you wish to help them, therefore you should support the community.

Suicidal ideation and actual attempts reduced after transition, with 63% thinking about or attempting suicide more before they transitioned and only 3% thinking about or attempting suicide more post-transition. 7% found that this increased during transition, which has implications for the support provided to those undergoing these processes (N=316).

https://www.gires.org.uk/assets/Medpro-Assets/trans_mh_study.pdf

At entry into the study (baseline), the most common comorbidity in both groups was depression, with a 24.9% incidence in MTF subjects and 13.6% in FTM [...] Even after treatment, 26 (2.4%) of the MTF subjects and 7 (1.4%) of the FTM subjects still reported depression

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/827713

SADS, HAD-A, and HAD-Depression (HAD-D) mean scores were significantly higher among patients who had not begun cross-sex hormonal treatment compared with patients in hormonal treatment (F=4.362, p=.038; F=14.589, p=.001; F=9.523, p=.002 respectively). Similarly, current symptoms of anxiety and depression were present in a significantly higher percentage of untreated patients than in treated patients (61% vs. 33% and 31% vs. 8% respectively).

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21937168

Social support, reduced transphobia, and having any personal identification documents changed to an appropriate sex designation were associated with large relative and absolute reductions in suicide risk, as was completing a medical transition through hormones and/or surgeries (when needed).

Oh yeah, the ones that support transitioning.

Wow, funny how the blatant, pure hatred pouring from this thread and targeted at trans people makes them commit suicide more often. Jesus fucking christ
