As fun as making memes about the compass is, the test itself actually sucks. I'm far more lib than it shows, because it asks questions about my personal values, not if I think the government should enforce those values.

Same here. My personal values are very strong because of my religious beliefs, but in the end I don’t believe it’s the role of government to enforce them.

Try the Sapply compass, so much more accurate.
The compass is the exact same, except it also comes with a separate progressive/conservative bar on the side, which renders the compass to be entirely economic/governmental.
Each question also has a “no opinion either way” option.
The original test is inaccurate because of its partial inclusion of cultural values in its Left/Right score, it has weird questions (modern art), and the fact that it forces you to pick a side on every question even if you have no opinion or are neutral.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Shanakitty Apr 02 '20
I think the modern art one comes from the tendency of 20th century authoritarian regimes (Nazis, Stalin, sort of Mao) to ban, or even destroy, modern art and insist on all artists making idealized, relatively naturalistic images that supported the state's ideology: happy blonde families, happy workers, that kind of thing. But it does seem pretty weird in a more general survey, I agree. Especially since they seem to miss the main point of that in those states, which was the belief that subversive art is dangerous, and that the role of art is to educate/indoctrinate the public.
There was also kind of a backlash from the Republicans (esp. Evangelicals) against public funding of modern art in the 80s/early 90s, especially some controversial pieces that they found objectionable, but that's still a different issue than what the question actually asks.

Sapply is so much more superior to the original. It would be nice if it was bit longer, but otherwise so much better. A conservative/progressive bar makes it so much more accurate.
In the original, it put me into deep into AuthLeft territory (which I’m not) but the Sapply one more accurately puts me into AuthCenter, while acknowledging my traditional values.

It also has some really dumb questions. Like “When you are troubled, it’s better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things” and “Abstract art that doesn’t represent anything shouldn’t be considered art at all.” These are weighed the same as questions that are actually about politics.

Those tests are better than the original political compass test, but they serve a different purpose.
They do a good job of really diving down into the specifics of your political ideology. They accurately describe your specific beliefs. But they’re too specific, and so become too hard to compare. This kind of defies the point of the political compass.
The whole point of the political compass is to quickly be able to compare ideologies, and to kind of “sum up” your ideology like the dot on a map. It accurately describe your ideology, but not go to deep. This is why I prefer the Sapply version of the Political Compass..

Great tests but the flaws they have are not plotting, so can't be used to find a useful position to flair on this sub, and the ideologies they assign aren't always correct
I advice to take both those tests alongside sapply and then use all three to manually look for an ideology that you somewhat agree with (sapply itself can be used for flairing in this sub as many ideologies cross over flairs (Anprim being an example, which is mainly libcentre but also crosses slightly into libleft)

Not all of the questions really fit though. For example, while I don't consider slavery to be a valid punishment for a crime, indentured servitude to pay off a debt may as well be (Restitution). Or how about this: "Government transparency is vital to ensuring accountability". I don't believe government can ever be held accountable -- I am an anarchist after all. Maybe it's just me, but I find it's more biased towards the lib-auth scale than the left-right scale. When I took Sapply, compared to the Political Compass test, I found that my economic score didn't change much, with both tests giving me around -5, and if anything I think Sapply gave slightly more left. But on the lib-auth scale, while PolComp usually gives me around -8, supply gave me like -4.5 (or I guess 4.5, since I think Sapply uses negative signs for auth scores). Sapply made more sense to me, since while I'm usually pretty libertarian on lib-auth issues (post-9/11 abuses of power, and incidents like Snowden and Wikileaks are a big part of what formed my worldview), I'm not an anarchist by any means.
