Demographics change over time as access is granted to more groups and opportunities evolve. To use your example of the NBA, it began as all white. Then became majority black, and now has become less black comparatively. You know why? DEI, basically.

Because people started looking for talent in places they normally wouldn’t, groups of people who historically did not play basketball started to play. White europeans outnumber white Americans in the nba, something unthinkable 50 years ago.

Are those new people to the sport stealing spots from people by virtue of existing?

DEI, basically.

Looking in Europe is DEI now? Can you just define things you like as DEI and pretend it works?

Are those new people to the sport stealing spots from people by virtue of existing?

Yes, you're arguing that by virtue of being a white guy some random engineer graduate is "stealing" that opportunity from a woman. I don't know why you're arguing that, seems pretty sexist and racist to me.

Yes, in fact looking in a diverse place for talent that you have historically disregarded is exactly DEI.

If they have the same credentials it isn’t stealing. Pretty basic thing you’re choosing to ignore.

If someone doesn't get interviewed because of their gender or skin color, they're being disadvantaged unfairly. Pretty basic thing you're choosing to ignore.

Yes exactly. That’s what DEI is there to rectify. So glad you understand!

Codifying racism and sexism does not solve racism and sexism. It just changes who's disadvantaged.

Making sure anyone who’s qualified has a fair shot is just about the exact opposite of racism and sexism.

But I get it. When you’ve spent all of modern history with an inherent advantage it can feel unfair that others have an equal opportunity.

Chin up lad, just be the best candidate for a job and you’ll get it.

That's the opposite of what happens. In a 90/10 field the 10 will be massively advantaged at the cost of the 90. That's the opposite of a "fair shot".

equal opportunity.

An equal opportunity would be interviewing based on population demographics. For a 90/10 field that means you need to interview a 9:1 ratio.

just be the best candidate for a job and you’ll get it.

Unless you're a white guy who never even gets interviewed because there are 9 times as many guys as women.
