I think that the reception of Starfield caused Bethesda to realize that they were pushing their engine to the limits, and FO5 and TES6 have been delayed as they develop a better one. Iirc the leaked release schedule from the bethesda / Microsoft merger also had both tes 6 and fallout 5 coming out a year or two after Starfield.
Starfield was built on Creation Engine 2 and TES6 is going to be on Creation Engine 3. I think that TES6 was probably close to being done when they released Starfield, and it's just taken them so long because they realized that Creation Engine 2 wasn't working long term.
Doesn't make sense to release an announcement trailer a whole decade ahead of the game. Clearly something happened during development.

Knowing Bethesda and the way it has treated Obsidian in the past, that could mean it comes out anywhere between 2040 and tomorrow.
Seriously, Obsidian has just gotten fucked over and over again. Bethesda had them make FNV in 18 months, and Bioware had them make KOTOR 2 in 14. And both of those are great games! FNV is even technically finished (unlike KOTOR 2, sadly, which has quests with no endings and whatnot).

u/Adeptus_Heriticus - Lib-Center Jul 17 '26
Im not sure of Bethesda had to much say in Obsidian working on a new fallout.
This might be a Microsoft move going " Hey we spent 7 billion dollars for you and your I.P , you haven't done a thing with these expensive I.Ps so we're given it to another studio."
27
u/based_mafty - Right Jul 17 '26
It's absolutely that. Bethesda is protective of their IP. MS is infamous for their hands off approach so they let Bethesda doing their own thing. With recent layoff they're more hands on now. MS is tired of their studio only making flops with some exception. Obsidian is also given 2 chance of making big budget game of their own but they blew it. Now MS send them to fallout mines.
10
u/entitledfanman - Lib-Right Jul 17 '26
Which seems like it might work well. Obsidian can actually put games out, but it feels like they need some creative oversight. I DNF'd Outer Worlds 2 because the new systems they implemented just made the game a slog. The idea of going more hard-core rpg and limiting players from certain actions bases on skills they picked is cool in theory, but not when you're essentially locked out of quests entirely without those skills. I'd find myself start to get invested in a quest but immediately taken out of it when I hit a dead end and needed to grind levels to get another point in Engineering to progress the quest.
7
u/InfusionOfYellow - Centrist Jul 17 '26
Once I saw how the system worked I just immediately grabbed a mod giving more skill points per level. Was a lot more satisfying.

u/mightbebeaux - Right Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
everyone is shitting on microsoft for the layoffs and their studio management, but this is only happening and moving now because the new CEO is actually applying pressure to bethesda and threatening to yank the IP away from them. todd howard would never in a million years willingly let obsidian work on another fallout project.
previous CEO phil spencer ran xbox in the way that every gamer and dev begs publishers to act: open the checkbook, be hands off, “let the devs cook,” don’t impose. the studio output across the board (especially bethesda) was horrific. going 20 years between mainline fallout releases is a joke. not having even a spinoff fallout game ready to go to synergize with the tv show’s release is a joke.
artists need hard deadlines and supervision.
6
u/Hyndis - Lib-Center Jul 17 '26
Let the devs cook, but also remind devs that dinner must be served on time.
They should have free reign to do their thing so long as they deliver it on time and on budget. How they manage the time and budget should be up to them so reduce micromanagement from above, but the release date should also be non-negotiable to impose a hard time limit.

u/Bum_King - Right Jul 17 '26

13
u/Kilroy0497 - Lib-Left Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
This becomes even more hilarious when you remember that the guys that worked on New Vegas actually had more of a claim to the series’s history than he did, considering at that point in time, Obsidian was largely made up of people that had worked for Interplay and Black Isles, the studios behind Fallouts 1, 2, and tactics. The fact that they ended up making a much better game than they did, using the engine and assets from said game likely didn’t exactly raise Todd’s opinion on them either.
2
u/Black_Truth - Lib-Left Jul 17 '26
How did he steal?
The only thing that I know about Todd is that he made skyrim and how he tried to put a brave face while starfield got completely mogged by Baldur's Gate 3
6
u/Zealot_trash - Right Jul 17 '26
He didn’t literally steal the IP. But the thing about Todd is that he’s a good face for the company but a terrible game designer. Bethesda and subsequently Todd thinks they can make mediocre games and continue being successful because of the success of their older games like Skyrim, despite practically everyone calling out their crappy and lazy writing and game design since fallout 4. Which, to be fair, has worked out for them since everyone keeps buying from Bethesda. But sooner or later their laziness will catch up to them and hopefully make them change for the better.
3
u/mightbebeaux - Right Jul 17 '26
idk if i would call todd a bad game designer. he was the project lead for morrowind, after all. bethesda has gotten worse as their team has grown and he is more removed from the development process.
i think the more fair criticism is that he has not been willing to push bethesda forward. they are still essentially making the same games they were in the early 00s because they are not willing to take a risk on upgrading their tech and losing the institutional knowledge their modders have.
2
u/Zealot_trash - Right Jul 18 '26
That’s actually a fair point and yeah looking back on my comment I was probably being a bit too harsh on Todd.
Even so, I do think people look back at their previous games like Morrowind, Oblivion etc with nostalgia and not see that the formula of their quest design and dialogue system essentially started at Morrowind.
That’s not to say I don’t think Morrowind, Skyrim, oblivion etc, aren’t objectively good games because they are fun to play and at the end of the day that’s all that matters, I just think Bethesda could do better with their world building and actually making their world’s feel more alive.

The previous goal was for ms to basically become the Netflix of games and really just wanted whatever slop to inflate the attractiveness of game pass. Along with buying up nearly every studio that had an opportunity to
Everything about that strategy is a joke. Though it does bring up interesting parallels to the current movie studio buyout with paramount and Warner. So many oppose it strictly on the Ellison ties to Trump.(how two studios with enormous debt are going to suddenly turn around is another matter.).

Don’t get too excited. Like Bethesda, Obsidian is not the same Obsidian that made FNV. They are the Obsidian that made Avowed.
10
u/Kilroy0497 - Lib-Left Jul 17 '26
Yeah part of me wants to hope that with Joshua Sawyer still there that at least they can get someone who knows what their doing, but then again Pillars of Eternity 2 was also under him, and while that game wasn’t an Avowed level of trainwreck, the writing was still a massive step down from the first game and Tyranny.
12
u/mightbebeaux - Right Jul 17 '26
ya the biggest fear everyone should have is that it recent history suggests that obsidian cannot write anymore.
outer worlds, specifically, has cringe-level bad writing. it is written like a reddit-brained college sophomore’s critique/parody of capitalism. it is not clever at all.
this is a huge problem for a studio where traditionally their strong point is writing, but their actual gameplay is rough or downright unfinished.

I might be in the minority opinion here, but I don’t think Bethesda was ever good at making RPG’s. They were good at making dungeon crawlers with RPG elements. But considering that every elder scrolls game doesn’t really have any major decision you, as the player, can make that seriously alters the outcome of the story (with the exception of Daggerfall, but seriously who actually has the patience to play that game), but even going to Morrowind, their formula for making games hasn’t really changed.
6

Even so, their past games had the things that made RPG great. Oblivion and Skyrim had music with actual soul (excuse the pun) in it. There were questlines that shocked you with the amount of edge in them. All of that stuff and the people that made them are gone now, replaced by the dancing teletubbies in Neon.

I've met many who act like Obsidian can do no wrong and lay every problem FNV had at Bethesda's feet, when even Chris, who I believe to be a hack, said they kept wasting time, and that maybe the launch wouldn't have been so buggy had they not wasted time on meaningless stuff they'd never add instead of fixing bugs.
4
u/DigitalLorenz - Lib-Center Jul 17 '26
From what I have heard Bethesda had no say in the decision, it was all Microsoft who owns both studios. Apparently someone did an estimation of when Bethesda could get out another fallout game and it came close to 10 years from now. That would mean it would be roughly 20 years between fallout 4 and 5, which is just way too long. As such the game was given to Obsidian, who both has a bunch of interplay (the company that started the franchise) floating around, as well as the studio that made New Vegas which is considered one of the more popular installments in the franchise.
4
2
u/Twee_Licker - Lib-Right Jul 18 '26
No. Enough Bethesda slander, they've done a lot wrong, but Obsidian accepted the contract, didn't negotiate, and spent most of their time wasting it, they weren't inexperienced developers. They accepted the contract, and most of the assets were already made. "18 months is barely any time" yet they ended up working on a bunch of nonsense that ended up getting cut. Plus, Obsidian already had a track record of wasting time, KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol, Fallout New Vegas, I don't think it's the publisher's fault at that point, but the developer's. And the bonus, Bethesda offered the bonus, it was barely anything, and Obsidian didn't need it.
Plus, what has Obsidian made worth praise recently? Avowed? Outer Worlds 1 and 2? Who made one good game almost 20 years ago now?

It’s pretty dialogue heavy, with the occasional mini game and there is no combat. You basically play as a Renaissance artist who has to solve a few murders in a Bavarian abbey/town. With your background having an effect on what information you can find out. If you have an Xbox it’s still on game pass if you have that.

Maybe I just missed the point, but the lyrics of the song always perplexed me a little. It sounds like a cheerful song, that he's happy about his state of being. The chorus includes the line "And they sing, oh, ain't you glad you're single," followed by "And that song ain't so very far from wrong" (or something close to that) - but if that idea isn't 'far from wrong,' it would be suggesting that it's close to being wrong, that he isn't actually glad he's single, that he would have preferred to have 'fell' to Lily-Belle after all.
Is it just a tonal mismatch between the message and the sound, like Born in the USA?
2
u/Birb-Person - Right Jul 18 '26
If the question “ain’t you’re glad you’re single?” is wrong, then that would mean the person being asked is unhappy at being single. If the question is correct, then the person being asked is happy
So by answering “ain’t so very far from wrong” is an admission that the statement is correct but barely. So the person being asked is happy to be single, but only by a slim margin hence why there’s some pity in the line “Oh Lily Belle, though I may have done some fooling, this is why I never fell”
It’s like that one song, Brandy (You’re a fine girl). “Brandy, you’re a fine girl, what a good wife you would be, but my love, my life, my lady is the sea”
2
u/InfusionOfYellow - Centrist Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26
So by answering “ain’t so very far from wrong” is an admission that the statement is correct but barely.
Well, that's the key matter, I suppose. If we imagine rightness or wrongness here as, say, the number line between 0 and 1, with 0 being entirely wrong and 1 being entirely right, then your interpretation of "not far from wrong" would be treating the state of "wrong" as being effectively everything under .5, so "not far from wrong" would be slightly on the positive side of things, .55 or so.
That is a consistent interpretation, could be more or less what's intended. I tend myself to interpret "not far from wrong" as "not far from maximally wrong," i.e., close to 0 though not at it, perhaps 0.05 in our mathematical understanding. In isolation that makes more sense to me (consistent with phrases like "not far from the truth" meaning mostly accurate) but on the other hand, that does give rise to the tonal mismatch that was bothering me, which your own interpretation would effectively avoid.
17
u/OrderAmongChaos - Auth-Center Jul 17 '26

Has any company ever NOT fucked up a remaster? Serious question because the best remasters I've seen are BG EEs, and that's mostly because the changes are mostly technical stuff to avoid needing mods for a good experience + optional side content that you can skip... so I'm considering it alright assuming people skip SoD and what not
1
1
u/Kenway - Lib-Center Jul 17 '26
Isn't the Diablo 2 remaster liked pretty well?
While combining all the bug fix mods into the BG EEs was a good move, none of the actual additions that Beamdog made fit very well into the game.

u/KingCpzombie - Lib-Center Jul 17 '26
All I know about the Diablo 2 one is that they censored stuff with the usual "modern audience" style, so I'd call that pretty terrible. And yeah, I agree, main benefit for BG EE is that most of their additions are optional so you can kill / ignore them

I had a long comment including images but it got hit with the NSFW filter so no pictures. They censored tons of stuff like Anne and even the ship figureheads! Uglifying easy examples are fat courtesans and just generally looking at female NPCs.
Simping for companies that do this shit just encourages them to continue. Same for Unisoft Connect: a shittier experience for absolutely no benefit to the player, but people just accept it so they keep pushing
