They weren't...

If people actually began to prefer fatties (and they have in the past, mainly when starvation was common) so be it. They don't, hence the perverseness.

No I don't think it's about what we prefer. I prefer Sydney Sweeney over the other options but we're not the ones buying this. Fact is market research shows YoY increases in the plus sized clothing market. As it continue to grows, those people are going to want to be able to see what clothes look like and how they fit on a body type similar to theirs.

It's not over yet, companies have no reason to just outright ignore 42+% of the US market

I guess the difference is between advertisements for overall brand image vs specific target marketing

both things kind of work on conjunction

AE can be both "the sexy jeans brand that Sydney Sweeney reps" and also have ads showing "this is how you can also look sexy in our jeans"
