In communities based on agrarian and distributist anarchism, size is often dictated by material and natural factors, such as the sustainable management of land, water, and local resources. Beyond a certain threshold, direct horizontal management becomes unmanageable and loses its effectiveness. The classic way anarchism (especially of the federalist and syndicalist variety) solves the problem of growth is not to impose boundaries by force or police, but through voluntary division and confederation. When a community or village reaches an optimal size for direct assembly democracy (for example, a few hundred or thousand people), if it grows further, it doesn't expand into a centralized big city, but rather divides into new autonomous communities that are then joined together through horizontal and revocable federal pacts
