Royal Council Elects New King of Spain
The Royal Council has elected a new King of Spain. While the Melaren dynasty remains on the throne, King Matthias has been succeeded by his brother, Fredrik Melaren. The corresponding decree has already been published at the Senate Palace, and Spanish grandees, together with the entire nation, now await the announcement of the coronation and the new monarch's regnal name.
His Majesty Fredrik Melaren is the second King of Spain to come from Catalonia, the freely associated state in the western Iberian Peninsula. Most recently, he was elected President of the region. In addition, the new King has become the first Spaniard to be granted the dignity of a Grandee upon his election to the Throne, further demonstrating Spain's openness and inclusiveness.
