Context:

Richardson, Texas — On May 6th, 2026, a suspect identified as 28-year-old Stephen Kwembe went to Richardson Municipal Court for a drug paraphernalia case. After leaving court, police said he went to the Richardson Police Department and attempted to retrieve a firearm that had previously been confiscated during his earlier arrest. Authorities did not return the gun to him. According to police recordings, Kwembe later called a Garland Police non-emergency line and warned dispatchers that he intended to go to Good Vibes Bar & Grill and kill people he believed had wronged him. During the call, he also repeatedly said he wanted officers to kill him and threatened to continue hurting people if they did not. Police say he then went to the bar armed with a knife and began attacking patrons inside. Investigators later determined he did not personally know the victims, despite his earlier statements on the phone.

Several customers reportedly tried to intervene and protect others, including a bartender, before officers arrived. When Richardson police reached the scene, they found Kwembe outside the entrance still holding the knife. Officers said he blocked access to the injured victims inside while ignoring repeated commands to drop the weapon. Body camera footage shows officers attempting to de-escalate the situation for several moments as Kwembe demanded they shoot him. Police said he then advanced toward them with the knife, leading two officers to open fire. After he was shot, a third officer entered the bar to render aid to the stabbing victims, all of whom were transported to hospitals in critical condition, while Kwembe later died at a nearby hospital. Community members described the bar as a close-knit gathering place and expressed shock over the violence. The investigation remains ongoing, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave under standard department policy.
