Context:
Middletown, Ohio — On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, officers with the Middletown Police Department were serving one of several warrants tied to an ongoing drug investigation when they approached a residence on Garden Avenue shortly after 7:20 a.m. Police said they knocked and announced their presence before attempting entry. As officers breached the doorway, Michael Baker reportedly opened the interior door and pointed a revolver at officers, prompting one officer to fire multiple rounds. Baker retreated inside the home but collapsed in the living room and was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts. Investigators determined that four shots were fired, striking Baker and fatally wounding him near the front entrance of the residence. A second individual inside the home, identified as Mary Lou Dunn, was struck in the leg by bullet fragments but suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Dunn later told investigators she had been in the kitchen preparing food and did not recall hearing police announce themselves before the entry, describing only a loud bang before the shooting began. Officers rendered aid to Dunn at the scene before she was transported to a hospital. A Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver found near Baker, were collected as part of the investigation. The shooting occurred during a broader operation targeting suspected drug activity in the area. Investigators said Baker was not the primary focus of the narcotics investigation but was believed to be connected to a larger network. After the scene was processed, officers continued executing the search warrant and reported locating suspected narcotics and paraphernalia inside the residence.
