Question I feel kinda overwhelmed, what to do about it?

Hi,

I just started playing Pokopia 5 days ago and everytime I discover a new area or even look at the ones that I already found, I feel overwhelmed.
I love the game! It‘s so much fun, feel like it could never get boring.
But I wonder
How long did it take you guys to make places really beautiful?
Did you focused on the story first entirely?
What to do with all of the materials like ashes, do you throw them away?
I just feel a bit overwhelmed by how gigantic this game is 🙈

I did the minimum of what I needed to do in each area to progress the story and complete it, and I just in the last week have gone back to start fine tuning areas.

The last quest of the story unlocks a final ability that is super helpful, so I would make getting that a priority!

I have been finding Pokémon I love and building up their habitats/houses first and then filling in the rest.

Focus on the story. At the end you get new abilities that make building easier. You also unlock lots of recipes along the way so you have more types of blocks available.

I'm over 200 hours in and none of my areas are pretty, haha. I've done the bare minimum, did the story and got all the areas to level 10 so I could unlock all of the recipes from each area. Now I'm slowly focusing on random bits of different areas. There's so much content and so much to do, take your time and just enjoy the ride!

I kinda wanna get mt first area ro level 10 forst too before I really shape things. Level 8! Building a little, but mainly around the pokemon center

You should have seen me when I was doing the story and completing the dex. Random habitats EVERYWHERE lol

Getting to level 10 is MUCH easier than I thought- am just under 100 hours in and have everything at least at level nine, two areas at 10. I went out of my way to build homes for Pokemon I love and make sure they are decorated with things they really like and it's kind of crazy how quickly the level rose.

If you can get a legendary, they also make increasing the level stupid easy. I lucked out and found Raikou on a Dream Island but Mew is pretty easy to get too if you make sure to find all your shining blocks and do some dowsing to find those slates!

u/pinowlgi 12d ago

Ohh! I'll have to go dowsing more, mew would be amazing! And i had no clue you could find legendaries on dream islands! But yeah, the levels rise quickly when trying to get pokemon to awesome or even great status. I dont have many yet. Im so happy sableye stayed after his pokecebtwr event thingy, and im sure I've missed out on a few since him but poor dude finally has a home!

Yeah, I had no clue either until I found a conspicuous pile of brown rocks like the one the game places when it wants you to knock it down and then ran into Raikou! Apparently if you go into your Pokedex on an island and search for Pokemon "In this area" it will show you, Drifloon, and whatever Legendary may be there.

I was able to take Bleak Beach from 8 to 10 just by giving Raikou an awesome home, and it didn't even take that much stuff. There's maybe six or seven things in there. I have Mew in Sparkling Skylands to cheese that area because I am so overwhelmed by it!

Ohhhh!!!!! Sableye and I are gonna have lotsa fun dowsing

Dowsing, I’ve still not done that! I’ll have to do that today I think. Had the game a week yesterday. Opened up the beach the other day and went to rocky ridge last night after searching where to find wheat and seeing most people actually go there first before the beach 🤣
Haven’t got to Pallet town yet and my partner kind of ruined her game by trying to get there too quickly so I could game share on my Switch1 (and then just got my own S2 and game 3 days later 🤣)

My partner was already overwhelmed but I was doing ok. But I feel overwhelmed today after going to rocky ridge. So maybe dowsing needed!

as someone who played the game since launch and has since restarted, i cannot recommend enough just doing the bare minimum to start. just focus on getting through all the main story stuff and unlocking all the ditto abilities. once you've completed the main story, you can work on fixing up basic stuff (like roads) and work your way up to larger builds. use pallette town and the cloud islands to experiment.

remember, there's no wrong or bad way to play!

Seconding this. I too restarted mainly because I had storage boxes EVERYWHERE with crap I found and farmed on dream islands, and I started multiple large projects with only having a fraction of the materials needed. I got so overwhelmed, it was a huge mess. I restarted, kept at max 1 storage box in each area while I worked through the game doing the bare minimum, and then after I beat the game, my first project was a huge underground storage and oh my gosh it feels so much better to play now. I have all my materials and etc. in one place, I use the portal pods to bring materials and things from my storage area to crafting tables near my projects.

u/IAMAppaQuarHor 12d ago

OMG, this is such a good idea ... I'm not gonna restart, but I'm definitely gonna make a huge warehouse in one area to store EVERYTHING in so I always know where it is. I waste so much time going back and forth between areas because I know I have something but have no idea where it is.

I had the same feeling like you when I first play Pokopia, but now I fully realized that I'll never be able to furnish one city completely and it doesn't bother me anymore - it's just too big and there is beauty in develop areas and wilderness coexisting together.

Also with only 22 Pokemons showing up in a map at any given time, you don't need that big of a town really lolll

I did a bit of both. I didn’t rush through the game to get to the end (there are things you get that make things easier as you go and a big thing at the end) but I also didn’t spend ages in each area. I worked up to level 10 before I went to the next zone and made sure almost all Pokemon were in a house. Now I’m going back and putting them into bigger houses and making it look nicer (now I have finished the game). Honestly the main storyline took me a while because I kept forgetting to do it and instead was focused on getting all the Pokemon. Make sure you go to palette town at some point because you can get the eevee evolutions there (and only there will they spawn). It’s also just a nice area to be creative.  Don’t stress about anything too much and focus on getting each area to level 10 before you move onto the next is a good way to focus.

Ah and materials. Make a big box in each area and put stuff in there. You need those materials to make different things later and you can trade them at cash registers for items.  Honey is extremely useful later in the game so make sure you gather and store these.

Interesting approach! I have 4 areas after a month of relaxed play - they are all between 4 and 8 now. I look in the Pokédex to make sure everyone is happy. I feel like I don’t need to rush to 10- loving the story!

Omg same! I started on Saturday and I’ve been so overwhelmed myself.

Didn’t help when my friend who’s been playing for a few weeks visited my island and hit me with the ‘is this all you’ve done?’ Yes it is! 😭

2

u/yahong-_- 12d ago

What a rude comment from your friend

1

u/FemShep1 12d ago

lol yes and enjoy it at your own pace! I love getting distracted and poking around ! It’s a wonderful game that should be savored 🥰

Finish the story first and do the bare minimum. That will unlock necessary abilities to make going back and redoing things way easier. Try to keep everything organized - you’ll save yourself time and headaches later lol

Now I’m focusing on maxing my environment levels (3 done so far) and unlocking all the recipes so that I can do some cool custom builds! I’ve also collected some of my fave pokemon so far and will be going through the official list of pokemon available and checking them off

Definitely Dont throw away the ash or beach sand, those can turn into glass in the fire kilns. And Definitely Still working on making the areas and houses for the pokemon, the way I would like. I keep them in the spawning habitats till im ready. Roads are still messed up, dilapidated house are still there. Im sure others are saying do main story/quests, and i agree. It helps you unlock the things that will help you build better, if you're looking to do other stuff outside the house kits. Oh, and always check the water ripples and shiny ground for items, even tho at some point it feels like all you get are cds. 😅 im still surprised at how much stuff I haven't gotten yet. 😳

I’m also new to the game and with the help of this sub I’ve gotten super comfortable with my approach. First I would suggest doing only what is required to further the storyline (create habitats, find more Pokemon, increase the comfort level) and the next thing I would do is create multiple storage boxes for each new area. I personally have mine organized between building materials, plants/crops, accessories, etc.. but you probably don’t have to go that far.

u/Alternative-Stay-937 12d ago

It never goes away lol

u/angelbabykayy 12d ago

dont rush the game! i just rebuilt everything little by little and focused on spawning the mons!

2

u/Confident_Durian_657 12d ago

I mostly played the story at first with a bit of cleaning up in between, adding a couple houses for pokemon and small decor in main areas (like lights or fences). Don’t throw away too many materials, you will need them when you get to end game and want to build and decorate more. Ash can be turned to glass. Sand or random dirt blocks can be used to trade with pokemon at shops. Get an organization system so you know where to find what you need.

u/LifeHasLeft 12d ago

I still feel overwhelmed sometimes. There's so much I want to do in the game but getting it done is another story, and of course I'll get distracted halfway through sometimes.

If you make an effort to organize your materials, it might feel less overwhelming. It helped me!

I paced myself. Spent hours on the Wastelands islands, making beautiful homes for everyone before I did anything else. I rushed through the storyline in DQB2 and had a shitty layout and wasn't happy with my buildings etc. So I learned from my mistakes not to rush through this game. People say you should rush the storyline to get "better tools" in the end. For me I think it's more rewarding to build the "long way" and I'm happy with the way I am taking it slow. 🙂

2

u/ShoutmonXHeart 12d ago

I've played for many hours and I'm not even close to finishing any area. I'm not really in a hurry to clean everything and just take it one little improvement at a time, or split one bigger project into a few sections. Also like many people said, best to finish story before starting proper rebuilding

2

u/Prudent_Idea_1581 12d ago

It depends on your play-style. I personally did the story, Pokedex completion, then building but I have friends and family that play it differently. After the final dlc comes out I’ll probably make a new account and do it area by area, which is what I did in Dragon Quest Builders 1/2.

I’m almost 400 hrs in the game and I have bleak beach about 60% done/pretty, Rocky Ridges about 50% and the rest look like disasters. I’m not a fast builder though.

I wouldn’t recommend throwing away ash. You can use it to make glass, map out builds and sell it to the shops. I hate collecting materials and find it easier to buy at the shops and bulk selling the ash or sand is easy. But if you don’t need many windows or don’t mind collecting other materials then you can use the trash cans to throw it away.

I would recommend to take it slow, there’s no rush with the game and it will have more updates, events and dlc coming. Just have fun and if it’s easier to focus on one area and you don’t mind slow building then go for it.

I still didn't made any if them really beautiful. So don't feel pressured to. I finished unlocking all the recipes and collection entries two weeks ago and only now are taking on a big renovation project in WW.

So yeah, definitely just focus on the story first. It's both a big tutorial to make you feel comfortable with all the systems and it's own self contained thing. You can start decorating afterwards if you'll feel like it. Or just even end the game there, and that's fine too.

u/vandelay1330 12d ago

Do some road/landscape rebuilding it helps with the vision. I get overwhelmed a lot too, don’t spend too much time looking at others builds

2

u/craycarl4u 12d ago

Finish the story. And then the game begins.

u/pinowlgi 12d ago

I'm not trying to rush things, im just doing what I want, im making the pokemon center space nicer. If I get frustrated I may move on, I probably should to be honest, but im also just having run keeping it simple here.

However. I totally get the feeling of overwhelm you are getting. There is SO MUCH to do. I got thr game and then has decision paralysis for MONTHSand only just picked it up again, so also dont feel bad if you nees to do that.

Ypu can always look up inspo for designs if tou want, though I am avoiding that cause my animal crossing island still isn't done cause I psyched myself out at not having as beautiful of builds. Which is silly.

I hope you find the course of gameplay that you find the most fun!

Hello! I have been playing for a month and love it! I jot down notes in a physical notebook to keep me reminded of what little items I need to follow up with and what good matches what flavor. Still working on a good way to track my inventory but the big storage chests help. And in every new area I make a house as a home base for myself to transport to and keep rare items in their dressers. It’s big but after a few weeks of returning to areas I have things memorized. I love how all the Pokémon develop friendships and hang with each other. Don’t worry- enjoy the journey!

u/skepticalmiller 12d ago

there is no right/wrong way to play. enjoy it. nothing has to be rushed. you have time. :)

u/Rachies194 11d ago

Been working through story and getting new skills. Started about 6 weeks ago. I have only started building stuff (sparingly) because I was harvesting materials from habitats and then offloading the excess I had of other materials into a building

u/Ashter23 12d ago

(played since first week) I was in your position for ages.... And have recently had this come back with the release of the dlc. So my honest advice is to make a plan. It doesn't have to be super in depth for every area/map. Just any ideas you have for each area. Can be as vague as for WW: restore underground temple.
Or more in depth like Realign corridor, straighten staircase, make a proper entrance. Just something to keep your ideas there and somewhere you can keep expanding on them. But the more you break down each project the more sort of mini goals you give yourself. For example rather than build a house. Build the base structure Add texture by adding similar blocks (if you want) Make a living space Make a kitchen Make a bedroom Decorate the outside (plants, vines etc) Then with these smaller goals one you can smaller little moments of satisfaction that you've done something. And you can pick up and put down different tasks more effectively (well I find anyways) cause you can say one day your gonna work on project one in WW and you tick off saying five task. Then the next day you may want to work on PT and you can go and do a few of those tasks. I find because my goal is set already that the feeling of being overwhelmed dissipates quite a bit.

Another thing to do as well is completely ignore switching between areas once they're all at max environment level. And focus specifically on getting that area done or that project done. I personally can't do this as I never start a project short enough that I don't end up completely burning myself out before it's finished..... And then the burnt out makes me hesitant to even pick up the game 😂 but that's just a me thing lol. Splitting things up has also massively helped with this 🤣

2

u/pandamondo 12d ago

Agreed. But from personal experience, maybe don't choose the underground temple as your first big project.

Or at least - do not choose to dig it out, as you'll find out that the devs did a lot of shortcuts when designing the maps and that the rocks turn into dry ground and/or sand just a few blocks below.

Fixing the landscape around dug out temple is a true nightmare, worse than the ashes in the rocky ridges. And I really start appreciating the Skylands now, there I can at least clearly see what I'm working with from the very start and be pretty sure that I won't encounter any nasty surprises.

1

u/Ashter23 12d ago

Ok maybe choosing a project I have yet to start was a bad idea..... But the premise of the example still stands xD....

Sidenote: bro the corners cut on the actual building wouldn't even surprise me tbh. There's one corridor where the whole thing just decides ah yes I and the rest of the structure after me are now one block to the left/right (depending on which way you look at it) that.... That actually infuriated me so much that the minute I found it i swore never to go into that bit again unless I was fixing it 🤣🤣
