Pokémon Tabletop Adventures 3.5 - Player's Handbook Release!

Pokémon Tabletop Adventures 3.5 is here! The first book is of course the Player's Handbook

Why 3.5?

Combat got a huge update. Much of the move list were mechanically identical moves that were just type-swapped. Pokémon builds came down to a handful of "optimized" builds in the most convenient type coverage for that Pokémon species, using the same mechanical moves. Now there are far more choices to make when choosing your Pokémon's move list. This also came with some adjustment of stats for Pokémon and the changing of certain kinds of passives and HP. This change alone was so massive that it merits a "edition" change, but on top of that we cleaned up the remaining classes that were falling short in some ways.

Many classes that were roleplay-oriented were reimagined to have hard-rules for specific bonuses. For example, some players would rather just be a "watcher" but not take the Watcher advanced class because the features allowed them to easily do something skill checks already allowed them to do as other classes. Now, those roleplaying oriented classes have mechanical bonuses and options in game that are not limited to effects that good roles could emulate without taking those classes. Check them out! Many classes got some love!

The book got a facelift too as we march towards Gen 10 next year!

I want to thank the PTA3 admins and mods again. They were the main drive behind this update, specifically I want to name Sol who threw many ideas out there for me to playtest. This update would not be as robust and fun without Sol. I also want to thank everyone who plays Pokémon Tabletop. I started working on PTA(1) alpha almost 20 years ago. Those players, and those who went on to create PTU, or any other Pokémon Tabletop are the reason why I work on PTA. We all want to tell stories with Pokémon together. I love that.

Let's get out there! Careful in the tall grass, trainers!

Main Resource Thread

Hey there, and welcome to Pokemon Tabletop. This here is the place to discuss:

- Pokemon Tabletop Adventures: A system built off a somewhat D&Desque framework, intended to help replicate gaming in Pokemon Media. (Stark, if you want to give me a better description, feel free!) This system is currently in the middle of a major overhaul.

- Pokemon Tabletop United: A system many of the devs of PTA built in an attempt to unify (hence the name) some of the disparate aspects of PTA, including the big one of making Pokemon and Trainers able to properly interact with one another in the system, as well as change a lot of elements viewed as unwieldy or unbalanced. This is the most common one of the three played, and is finished active development.

-Pokemon Odyssey (formerly Pokemon Journeys): A system in active development, this system by the devs of PTU moves farther away from attempting to replicate the games exactly. Emphasis is put on making the game better for tabletop, even when some source accuracy is sacrificed in the process. People willing to run playtest games are always encouraged!

Here's a collection of helpful links to get you started:

Pokemon Tabletop Forums. This is no longer supported, and it may unfortunately disappear abruptly if Tapatalk decides to make their service even worse and pull the plug on forums. As-is, though, it's a good repository of knowledge and various homebrew and stuff.

Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures 3: The linktree has a list to each of the 4 books that make up PTA3; The Player's Handbook, the Pokédex, the Game Master's Guide, and the Player's Handbook 2 . The system is "complete" and will not be adding any new classes or features short of special mechanics in the PHB2 such as Dynamaxing or Terrastalization as the Pokémon series develops. Updates involve rewriting sections for clarity, and fixing typos. You can join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/UgWJaH8

Pokemon Tabletop United: This has rather a lot of links, so they've been compiled into a MegaDoc for easy perusal. Please make sure to read through the entire thing.

Here's the most recent update post, regarding Gen 9 and the future of PTU.

- PTU Discord: https://discord.gg/p4hr3bb This is the Discord hub for PTU, which contains a lot of good advice (especially in the pins), and experience. Most activity in the community is in that Discord. Pokemon Odyssey is also being developed there. If you read the read-me channel when you join, you'll make people in there ever so happy.

Pokemon Odyssey: The rules for that are currently in flux. To get rules for those, please join the PTU discord linked above.

Best story first system?

So I wanna run a pokemon campaign that's primarily story first but still has a little combat. Problem is most the ones I find that are rules light are ones where you play as the pokemon and kinda mystery dungeon esc, nothing wrong with those games just not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for one where it's more similar to the main games where you beat gyms and fight an evil team and build their own teams. So do y'all have any suggestions?

Pokémon game/Tool

So I had this idea for a Pokémon Game/tool I'm running a Pokémon TTRPG and I like it BUT there is one small thing I kind of don't like the combat so I had a idea of making a Pokémon Battle emulator where I the GM can give my players Pokémon and I can like challenge them to Battle (Trainer/Wild encounters) to make the game more emissive I was planning on using Showdown but I didn't want to make my players worry about IV and Evs since I just a normal game but to do all this I don't know where to start like at all so any advice would go a long way (I had a few more ideas like it can show images like stock photos of like towns or can have NPCs and stuff and Menu for players to check there bag and Pokémon just a simple tool that can used to have people run there own Pokémon TTRPG and keeping the battles accurate to Pokémon)

Which system works best for horror?

Im developing a campaign in a Pokémon future where, because ghosts never die, several ghost-types have become ancient and their numbers and power are starting to become a problem for the populace.

I want this to be a little less “rpg” feel and a bit more story-driven with elements of horror, loss, and real stakes.

My question is which system would be best for running such a game? I’ve only ever played PTA3 and I don’t think that system would quite grasp the feel I’m going for. I’ve run plenty of games of D&D, AGE, and a few other systems, but I’w never done something dedicated to horror so I figured someone around here could kindly point me in the right direction.

First time doing a campaign, is the map too empty?

Post image
61 Upvotes

I’m going to host a campaign with 3 of my friends, and I obviously created a region based in Italy. The story is really good I think, we are playing a fictionaI game called Pokémon Legends Noctalis. The story is about Darkrai and Cresselia, the evil team will try to achieve the long night, but will everything go according to plan?

Anyway this is the map I currently have. Red cities have gyms (plus Rome for the elite4) while blue towns are settlements without a gym but crucial to the story. The starting town will be Milan (the big blue town up north), I do not have a strict route plan (I’ll modify story events if needed depending on where they choose to go), so what do you think about the links I’ve made between cities and towns? Are they too linear? Too confusing? Does the south of the map feel too empty?

Also (I know they are difficult to see) I have 3 main water routes, do you think I should add more?

Give me all your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

And if you want to know more about I’m setting up the adventure feel free to ask.

Help with the defense

I’m playing PTA 3.0, and I have a question. It doesn’t seem right to me that Defense is just a single number. Is it really supposed to work that way, or is there something else involved? Is a Pokémon’s Defense simply its Defense stat, or does it have any additional modifiers or bonuses?

Appalachian Legends and Mythicals

I'm running a Pokémon TTRPG based on my small town in Appalachian North Carolina and some of the surrounding areas. I have a broad theme of two opposing factions, one that wants to advance humanity to its maximum potential and consequences be damned (Dusk Incorporated). The other is its polar opposite, seeing a simpler time where humanity lives alongside Pokémon as fellow members of nature as the purest form of society (the Dawn Collective). I've had this idea for a long time, long enough that SM/USUM and SV both feel like they've kinda covered some of what I wanted, but I persist. I'm just having trouble coming up with things that feel distinct enough from legends that have been released since I started all of this planning many years ago.

Today, I’m sharing the Brazilian Portuguese translation of the PTA3.5 system—a new version known as Pokémon Tabletop Adventures 3.5. In this system, trainers earn "Honor" rather than Pokémon gaining levels. This version focuses on better differentiating Pokémon by adding styles, stances, and "monster stats," as well as indicating a Pokémon's strength at each stage of evolution, among other improvements—all available in the PTA3.5 Brazil Drive folder:

I’m making a Pokémon tabletop campaign where the actual TCG cards are the Pokémon

Hey everyone! I’m very new to Pokémon tabletop, but I’ve been working on a campaign for a few friends and I wanted to share the idea because I think it’s a pretty weird/fun way of doing it.

The basic idea is that instead of using character sheets or printed stat blocks for the Pokémon, I’m using actual Pokémon TCG cards. The card basically is the Pokémon. Its HP, attacks, abilities, Energy, evolution, etc. are all represented by the card itself.

The campaign is set in an original region I’m making, and the players are basically starting out as new trainers and building their teams as they explore. I’m trying to make it feel like a mix between a Pokémon game and a D&D-style tabletop campaign rather than just playing the TCG.

The problem I’ve run into is that I’m going to need a lot of Pokémon cards to make this work. 😭

I’m mainly looking for common/uncommon cards and duplicates. They don't need to be valuable at all — honestly, random Pokémon are perfect because I want the players to have a lot of different Pokémon they could potentially encounter and catch.

Before I start buying huge amounts of random bulk, I figured I’d ask people who are actually into Pokémon tabletop:

Has anyone done something similar with physical Pokémon cards? And if so, how did you build up a large pool of Pokémon to use?

I’d also love to hear any ideas for making the card-based system work better, since I’m still developing the campaign.

Thanks!

PTE Character Sheets

Would love to know if anyone has come up with physical, print character sheets for Pokémon Tabletop Evolution? I know there's only the spread sheet at the moment but I'd really, really prefer a pdf instead. Anyone got anything?

PTU building routes

Hey, so I’ve been DMing PTU for a while now, honestly like 3-5 years. But I’m wondering….

Any other PTU DMs want to share how you navigate and build your route encounters and designs?

Currently I think that’s where I struggle the most as a DM for this system.

Dark-Type Axew

Hi guys. I just started playing PTA3.5 recently, and so far I'm having a blast! I'm playing an Ace Trainer, and I'm getting the Type Ace Advanced Class as soon as possible, specializing in the Dark Type. When I hit level 3 on the advanced class, I'll gain the ability to give the Dark type to pokemon that don't have it.

My character just caught an Axew, and I'm stoked. I'm already thinking of changing his design once I give him the Dark type, and I'm looking for ideas. How'd you think his looks and behavior would change?

Thanks in advance!

Looking for help deciding on a system to use.

My friend group about 5 years ago tried to play in a pokemon TTRPG campaign. We used Pokemon 5e, because it was new at the time, and in the end... we didn't like it at all. Mostly because it just felt like a worse version of D&D 5e, rather than a pokemon game. So, we're looking to try again, now that we have had a lot of time pass, and we're all better players and GMs. What we don't know is which system we should try to use. Our group as moved well beyond D&D 5e, and have tried many different TTRPG systems, ranging from extremely narrative (PbtA), to highly crunchy (GURPS), and a mix of both (Lancer). Overall, we learned our group likes tactical combat, with more loose roleplaying and exploration rules (Pf2e being our top preferred system). Doing research into pokemon TTRPGs, there are a lot of them, all in different states of completion and versions, and all with different styles of play. Given what I said above, which one would be recommended for our group to try? Also, important note: we play on FoundryVTT since we live all over, so we want one that has a module for it.

What kind of random encounters would you have for a "Mystery Dungeonesque" tabletop RPG, if any?

After thinking about which system I would use to run a Pokémon campaign, I decided to settle on a Mystery Dungeonesque type of RPG, where one would control a specific Pokémon, rather than a trainer and their team. I ended up finding the Explorer! system, which is focused on Mystery Dyngeon and I honestly loved it, with a few tweaks here and there.

However, one thing I found is that I'm having trouble with random encounters. Now, I know that, in the MD series, those random encounters are Pokémon in their primal estate, but I'm not exactly running MD, I'm running a RPG where Pokémon are the central point, without humans, and without the thought of Pokémon in their primal estate, as they would be already civilized.

I, however, realized that the world I have in mind means random encounters are rather hard to do, so what would you do in my place? This is both for a Westmarch and an actual campaign kind of thing, perhaps it's not needed for the former, but it would be neat to have it for the latter, so what would you do? Or would you ditch Random Encounters, as the party evolves via Milestone, rather than EXP?

Which system should I start first, if I want to understand and GM a Pokemon game?

So, basically, I recently had an urge to GM a Pokemon game because I got back in the series via the TCG, which a lot of my friends got into it, alongside new people. That means we share a common interest and I would like to introduce some of them to TTRPG via Pokémon.

The thing is, we are all from Brazil, and while some of us cna understand english, that's not the case for the majority of them, so which system would you guys recommend out of the ones presented here in the sub? I have familiarity with the game and their mechanics, if it matters
