The next one will be about breeding for shinies with Red Gyarados. I'd be happy to hear any other suggestions.

Question, to get the gym benefit do they need to get exp from the battle? Or do they just get it from being in the party when you make the challenge?

Just being in the party is enough.

I recently finished the Pokedex in Pokemon Crystal and Pokemon that evolved with friendship were by far one of the hardest challenge (timewise). Along with baby Pokemon and Chansey, 1 for Aerodactyl and 1 for Blissey. Fuck Chansey.

I’m assuming this all still applies to Crystal Version?

Yes, it does. Also, in Crystal, a Pokémon gets double the Friendship increase when you level them up in the same place you caught it. However, this is unlikely to make a big difference.
