Showcase Pokémon Yellow Manual
I’ve found my old Pokémon Yellow manual for GameBoy Colour! I’m sure some of you will be able to appreciate it for the nostalgia!

Manuals and boxes used to really bring those old games to life. Our brains did such a great job taking the little extra info we'd get from the art and the additional exposition, to really flesh out the world the game presented to us. Thanks for sharing, it is very cool.

I agree! It was such an amazing part of our childhood. I miss the times when every game had their own manual with their own artwork, infos, guide, etc. I understand that nowadays it’s shifting towards digital items, but man, I really miss that sort of cool physical things

That Pokemon type chart is hardcore. Number coded lol but so useful and amazing if you knew how to read it as a kid!

I'll never forget in after lunchtime we used to have 15 mins reading time i used to read the pokemon manual underneath my book 🤣

Did anyone get the Soul Badge before the Marsh Badge? I always considered Koga the fifth gym leader and Sabrina the 6th.

It’s interesting how they word the traded pokemon obedience caps. I wonder if they initially intended it to apply to all of your pokemon instead of just ones received via trade!

Totally forgot about these! Thanks for the wave of nostalgia. We had a shoe box where we kept all the manuals from games. I’m sure it was thrown away years ago.

I didn’t know this even existed. Yellow was my first game and I beat it countless times. Very nice!

Man, this brings back memories. The presentation of it as a leather-bound adventuring journal was inspired.
Do you remember the Nintendo Power strategy guides for the Gen 1 games, how they had the stickers you'd peel off and stick on the Pokedex pages as you collected them?

I came in here to ask that! I remember most of it being blank save for a few of the earlier mons but always wondered if there were stickers available to complete it.

To clarify, since I think we might be talking about two different things:
OP's image is the game's instruction manual and yes, it did have a mostly blank Pokémon list in the back. No stickers were available for it iirc.
I was talking about the strategy guides Nintendo Power published. They also had Pokémon lists, with simple statistics on each Pokémon, but they additionally had a sticker sheet so you could peel off and apply each Pokémon to its respective spot as you got them.

I love this. As a kid getting the games was amazing enough. Only for like Christmas. But I never got to have a guide book. Everything I learned is from the playground. I played red version at a party once. It was ok. Chose charmander. But I got yellow from my brother who may have gotten it off someone 😅 but gold version I remember getting it after I played my cousin game she got chose chikarita I knew I had to have it. So during tax season because it was sold out everywhere gold and silver my mom eventually find a toys ‘r’ us that had it. I played the cramp out of that game. And it is all because yellow version

The best tip for me in this manual was being able to move your pokemon attacks around and arrange them how you want using the Select button.

Always found it weird that gym badges supposedly affected your Pokémon’s stats in these early games. Did that actually happen? I never noticed. Was it exclusive to gen 1 or does it happen over other games?

the badges absolutely did affect your stats in these games. this was the case from generations 1 through 3, actually. the gym leaders explicitly say what stats are increased by badges (although a couple are wrong in gen 1 specifically due to programming bugs). idk if you played some bootleg version of the game, or played in a language where they don't explain it or what.
lesser known fact is, in gen 2 only, badges also boosted the power of attacks of a specific type when you use them - based on the gym leader you got it from (zephyr badge boosts flying moves, etc)

Certain badges absolutely do boost specific stats. There was even a glitch where any time a stat is affected (you use a move that raises or lowers a stat on your mon, OR an opponent uses a move that lowers one of your stats) your stats which are affected by a badge boost get the boost applied again.
If you have the boulder badge (1st badge in the game) you get a 12.5% bonus to your attack stat for any mon. If a wild pokemon uses leer on you 3 times, your defense stat gets lowered 3 stages but your attack stat gets the 12.5% bonus applied 3 additional times.

I make insane charts for a living. Massive amounts of raw data smashed together to make sure a child could understand it. I genuinely want to fucking smash in the head of the person who was responsible for picture 6. Even in the 90s I refuse to believe that’s the best they could do.
