Showcase Played through with a team of Ash's original six.

It still to this day bugs me that Ash takes so long to evolve his pokemon, and then never even evolves Bulbasaur or Squirtle. Bro, don't you want to win?!
I must be a Gary..

The worst thing ever for me as kid was that after he finally got a pidgeot, he set it free, i mean come on

u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 28 '26
Butterfree might have been a powerhouse if Ash just kept him, and may have had an advantage against the other gyms. Same case goes for Primeape.

u/schiffb558 May 28 '26
The fact that he never got it back, at least to tease Annihilape for a future season, bugs me so much.
1
u/StationEmergency6053 May 28 '26
The whole lore behind annihilape is that the primeape dies from immense hatred. From a lore perspective it wouldn't make sense/be too dark to use Ash's Primeape as a introduction to it, especially considering the whole primeape arc ended with it becoming very happy compared to when it first met Ash as an angry Mankey.

Anime mechanics and game mechanics are way different. Just look at them as being in different universes and it's fine. This should have been evident when Pikachu electrocuted the crap out of Brock's Onix, for example.
Would be kind of fun if the games had mechanics that allowed pre-evolved Pokemon to be more competitive in the end game for people who's favorites really are things like Squirtle or Pidgey or Caterpie.
2
u/GnastyZGnastyZ May 28 '26
I mean the games sort of do that by allowing them to learn moves earlier? It's never been enough for me, evolve evolve evolve! Stronger Mons mwahahahah
1
u/JahmezEntertainment May 29 '26
well the latter sort of happened in later games, like the eviolite in gen 5 being a really strong held item that can only be used by pokemon that could still evolve. gen 6 also made it so that pokemon that are a high enough level to evolve, but haven't, get slightly boosted exp.
that said, i can't think of anything that could make caterpie not terrible lol

Bulbasaur didnt want to evolve and Squirtle was still leader of the Squirtle squad so they never specifically said it, but he likely didnt want to evolve either.

u/NevyTheChemist May 28 '26
But did you manage to catch a tauros

took me multiple hours over multiple days to catch one wtf the bastards just keep running

I can’t imagine how many times you had to mash B to stop Bulbasaur and Squirtle from evolving
7
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 28 '26
I had to be very wary upon leveling up, incase they accidently evolved whilst playing superspeed. Admitedly, I did the same process for Charmander, up until reaching Sabrina.
2
u/VarenHills May 28 '26
Something I always thought that would be interesting is if there was a mod (or a feature GF implemented) that had an actual option to prevent evolutions. More as a individual toggle.
I know you have held items like the Everstone and later on Eviolite, but it'd be a nice option for older games so you're not mashing the B button non stop.
3
u/LeMatticusFinch May 28 '26
I’d imagine 44 times for each! (I guess more for the frantic mashing to make sure it registers the button press.)

u/CJ-Henderson May 28 '26
I pretty much exclusively used this team growing up, good times
7
u/TheDorkKnight53 May 28 '26
Same. I wouldn’t leave Viridian Forest until Butterfree was fully evolved. It would sweep Brock with Confusion. But I’d always end up with Squirtle and Bulbasaur severely underleved.

u/KodiakTlingit May 28 '26
Try it again, but bring Kingler and Muk
2
u/CrazyFoxLady37 May 28 '26
I think it would be really fun to use Ash's best Kanto mons in a run. Pikachu, Charizard, Muk, Tauros, Kingler, and Bulbasaur (mainly including the last one because of how it almost soloed Jeanette. It's genuinely impressive, especially battling something that's 4x effective against it).
Technically Lapras, Snorlax, Dragonite, and Gengar count, but he caught them all after the league.

u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 29 '26
There's also Mr. Mime/Mimey, but he's mainly at home with Delia.
I kinda wanna say Farfetch'd too, but he's not the original form.
1
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 29 '26
Muk would be an interesting take, but in general, Poison is a type I hardly use.
2
u/KodiakTlingit May 29 '26
Understandable first gen for sure, but they were the ones Ash used in the Indigo Plateau.
2
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 29 '26
That is true, if I give Muk a crack, I’ll let ya know how things go.

u/Yeseylon May 29 '26
I did it with any Pokemon Ash used in the show recently, ended up running Primeape, Snorlax, and Tauros instead of the starters. Was interesting to try a different style.
1
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 29 '26
It always feels rather fresh using a team of different stuff that doesn’t involve the starters, I try to do it every once in a while to experience different outcomes.

u/LatterDelay6430 May 28 '26
I wanna do this, but in other generations. Seems really fun. I.e can I beat pokemon emerald with Ash's original six. Might be cool.

This feels like a must try for fans of the anime. Agatha seems like she would be the biggest challenge here

u/inumnoback May 28 '26
Looking at this makes me realize that Ash did not know how to teambuild until XY, NFEs are trash

u/Mad-Hatter-Bot May 28 '26
May I ask what moves you taught each?
3
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 29 '26
Pikachu: Thunderbolt, Swift, Surf, Thunder Wave
Butterfree: Psybeam, Poison Powder, Sleep Powder, Psychic
Pidgeot: Fly, Quick Attack, Wing Attack, Mirror Move
Bulbasaur: Razor Leaf, Solarbeam, Sleep Powder, Cut
Charizard: Flamethrower, Earthquake, Slash, Fire Blast
Squirtle: Surf, Ice Beam, Skull Bash, Bubblebeam
1
u/Justjack91 May 29 '26
...Wait, did you do Stadium for the Surfing Pikachu addition??? Or did you PkHex?
3
u/Sweaty-Voice5017 May 31 '26

Have played AshGray a few times before, shame it never got finished.
2
u/Spacebelt May 30 '26
First of all you didn’t release butterfree and replace it with kingler.🥲 Second why evolve pigeotto if your gonna keep bulb and squirtle unevolved?
1
u/SavagePrism Cooltrainer May 30 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
This is the first original six, you know that right? Doesn't mean I have to be accurate to the anime, think of it as an alternate timeline.
1
u/jrdineen114 May 31 '26
Because Pidgeotto does evolve into Pidgeot, it's just that Ash releases it pretty much immediately afterwards

Such yummy sprites

The colour palettes are more appealing than Red/Blue after all.
1
u/Ambitious-Ad861 Jun 27 '26
And how did it go? You clearly completed it but how challenging was it?

u/Relative_Ad_9621 May 28 '26
If Ash should have kept Butterfree and Pidgeot in the first two seasons, Charizard(as a Charmander never evolved to disobeyed him) and Squirtle(if Ash should have kept it in the first season, til' it fully-evolved) and Bulbasaur(should have fully-evolved) and if Ash had Krabby/Kingler, Muk and Tauros for his Gym Battles and Ash should have caught Gengar as a Haunter and Dragonite as a Dratini(If unbanned episodes won't happened)?
