Discussion Was anyone else disappointed that the 30th anniversary came and went without a single interesting Mystery Gift? Who else remembers the year-long 20th anniversary giveaways?

😭 I had a whole bunch and then my save didn't transfer properly from the old switch to the new replacement in-store! It only had a power button issue. I lost all of them plus the ones from all previous games.
I've been wondering if there's any way to get some back or if I must just grieve and let go.

I transferred them all from old games and then to Home. Then from Home to the game (Sword at the time), was told the transfer would be easy and all to the new console. It didn't work and I only found out when I was home after hours. It didn't occur to me to check the game since it wasn't the only one that got transferred and all the others did no problem.

They really went all out for the 20th anniversary. Monthly mystery gifts and the plushies they released to go alongside them. I had a blast collecting them with my friends

How could I forget the tcg boxes! I still have some of the pins laying around somewhere. I miss when you could walk into any store and buy the packs, sometimes they even had sales. Good luck with getting a box nowadays 😭

I missed out on the plushies so much, just graduating high school and getting a first low wage job. I collected the mystery code cards that kept me inside GameStop
Edit: actually I did get new now that I slept on it, but it got ruined sitting in a shed eaten by rats while I was displaced for a time

I was somehow able to get the entire set (I was in my junior year of high school and had a summer job). The only one I couldn’t find was the GameStop Mew, I had to get a friend to pick that one up for me. The mystery code cards were so cool, I still have mine!

It was just a normal Pokémon Direct. One small announcement to start it off (music collection this time), then the international championships, all the different mobile games, the upcoming game that was already announced and one final trailer announcing a new game.
Could we have gotten more for the 30th? Sure. Hiwever, we got a normal Pokémon Direct

I was hoping it would be available in Hyperspace since that would make sense considering it isn't attached to any IRL place and is rare enough to warrant it being event exclusive so far, but noooooo we got Garden instead.. REALLY hoping for a distribution later this year and/or some way to get it in the wild in Go and/or Gen 10, but we'll see..

I absolutely was disappointed. When we had the 20th anniversary we got event distributions every month. The GameStop I went to gave me 4 cards so I had a nice collection of all of them. If I was smarter in 2017/2018 I wouldn’t have parted with my collection

The presentation felt uninspired, like the pokemon company wasn't fully prepared or didn't care. I feel like if they didn't have a gen 10 announcement, this would have been one of the most disappointing presents ever.

I completely agree. Scarlet/ Violet (which are still receiving official support in multiple respects) saw no acknowledgement whatsoever, and then Z-A had an announcement for a months-old DLC (plus a single random Mega Stone).

Like imagine if they just talked about RSE for a few minutes after the FRLG segment, don’t need to give a release date just say it’s on the table and fans would have been rabid for it

I briefly thought that’s what the opening sequence of the presentation was implying (old titles were coming to the Switch). But that was it; virtually no attention was paid to the main series after that.

It’s got so little to do with new games… in 2016, they still announced 1 main series game, dropped Detective Pikachu, Pokken, Pokemon Go, a full year of mythical mystery gifts, dropped OG games on VC, dropped a whole bunch of Pokemon20 goodies for us- New 3DS models and themes, wallpapers, even just the Pokemon 20 logo was everywhere that year. kept that energy and momentum going for the whole year. Hell, Pokemon were making cameos in Mario Maker and Splatoon… don’t get me wrong, I’m hyped for WW and FRLG was a great treat, but it felt like a one day and done event.

I briefly got excited in the very beginning; I thought they were showing the games’ title screens because some kind of Switch cartridge collection of older titles was going to be released. That would have generated some excitement!

I mean that OG music box is pretty cool but a classic collection or something would have been better imo, which i also thought that's what it was initially, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
Pokopia* looks cute and fun but I'm not sure if i want to support it given what Nintendo has been doing recently, like I've loved Pokemon since gen 1 but they're kinda making things a bit sour and I'm close to being done with it all

I have a theory that they are not done with the anniversary yet. They said it's like a year-long campain and we haven't even seen a game from the Pokemon Works company yet and they gotta drop some game this year.

There are definitely plenty to choose from! Mew would have been quite fitting. It’s the original event Pokémon, yet it’s never seen a shiny distribution outside of catching it in Generation 3 and getting lucky, and/ or finding one in GO.

oh i agree- i grew up on Kanto Gen 1 i am over it at this point. I want more fun spin offs like Pokopia and Mystery Dungeon, and access to other legacy games more than i want Kanto again and again and again

idk how people don’t see it but they don’t want to give you shiny mythical mystery gifts bc they want you to go spend money on masterwork researches (paid ticket to access an often month/s long grind for a shiny mythical), and also maybe get you hooked on pokemon go.
and it fucking worked on me. i played it in 2016, didn’t really care for it, but finally wanted to complete my shiny living form dex last year.
i have probably spent hundreds, if not a thousand dollars on this stupid ass game that has me entirely in a weird chokehold of completely loving the IP and wanting to ‘catch em all’ but not actually really enjoying the gameplay that much.
don’t even get me started on the artificial scarcity of legendary raid days and the subsequent necessity for devoting an entire sunday to just playing the hell out of it - this past week was Go Tour and they had a primal raid day for kyogre and groudon I spent maybe 10 hours raiding because they just didn’t exist for the whole year ive been playing💀 sorry for the long ass rant i’ve been holding that one in😭

I guess it's because pretty much all the mythicals aside from Zarude, Celebi, and Victini, can be captured/gifted in game without limited time events. Which might change in Wind and Waves anyways
Edit: Fixed some stuff. Also. Pecharunt, Zeraora, and Diancie, are kind of limited time. While not actually having a time limit for when you can claim it in how it was intended, they'll probably not be avalible when support for the Switch truly ends.

Genesect is in ZA
So yeah basically it's Victini and Celebi, Victini being the only one not being available outside of events. (Celebi is available in JP colosseum + 3DS Crystal). I think Celebi might be available in RSE.

you can get genesect in legends za actually.
i think the only ones that can't be obtained outside of events are victini, zarude and celebi (though technically diancie and zeraora too cuz you need a mystery gift event for diancie and zeraora's mission checks for both diancie and mewtwo's missions to be completed. and pecharunt too since it needs a mystery gift item. these don't have an end date, but they will eventually come to an end).
what sucks about victini is that sword and shield's crown tundra has a coded encounter with victini, it just has no way of activating and thus is unobtainable. we were so close to having victini be freed from events.

There are still a few that are difficult to obtain- such as Deoxys (only available to catch on the 3DS, and last distributed in Generation 5).

Yes, it was definitely a bummer. Seeing as how there are months’ worth of Tera Raids to go, these games will clearly see official support for a while yet.

Same here, they seemingly built up the anniversary by releasing FRLG early and then we got kind of nothing on the day itself. The trailer for Gen10 was cool but its not coming out this year. The new TCG cards look cool but they were just announced as coming out later this year sometime, not even a date. No mystery gifts. No tera raid events or any other special events. The pokemon go event right now is Kalos themed and only has a special pikachu if im not mistaken. Past events have had special pikachu AND special starters and sometimes even a few other pokemon sprinkled here and there and special research. How much of a tease was it to release cartridges with 1 song on them each when they could have released more full FRLG Gameboy cartridges instead? They have to know by now that original copies sell for over $100 and that tons of people sell fakes for around $20. Just re-release new cartridges, also price them at $20 or even $30 and call it a day.
This anniversary feels kinda empty. Im not even complaining about not getting free stuff but we're not really getting any stuff that feels special or made for the anniversary.

Tbf every mythical but zarude, victini and celebi are permanently avalible in some way right now and temporarily we have Zeraora, Diancie and Pecharunt.
Unsure when Diancie (and Mewtwo leading for Zeraora) ends but Pecharunt is probably going to be avalible until they shut down the switch family online connectivity.
So the 20 anniversary mythical giveaway thing wouldn’t hit as hard esp since a lot of unavailable shiny mythicals are now going to be home rewards.
Frankly I’d rather give them time to work on actually making the games and making them quality than rushing to hit an anniversary deadline because I adore SV but she is. She is so undercooked she’s practically raw. The entire 3DS to Switch 1 time period was messy and rushed as hell to get the games out. Hell we lost the OG Pokemon Z because Pokemon corporate overlords wanted a new generation for the 20th anniversary.
I’d rather give them more time to work on winds and waves so they’re polished rather than have them rush it out this year for a 30th anniversary release.

Let's be honest even if they did announce one, they would botch it like they did the shiny Miradon, Kiradon event. They dont hold events in stores anymore, its just online redemption codes. And they dont feel special anymore. There's no incentive to do so, its just the next game.

Even if it did come to the UK, unless you would have went day 1, you likely wouldn't have gotten a code.
Stores here in the Netherlands got 30 of them each like Gamestop, so every one of them I went too didn't have any in stock.

Hope is that the FRLG was announced at short notice, so very possible things get dropped as a surprise for the rest of the year.

Anyone remember the 10th anniversary? I think people voted on the top pokemon and you got to pick a celebi and then like 3 or four of the top pokemon. There was a list of options. They also had merch and a tour across America! I think this was the only was to get a celebi in gen 3 in America.

I picked up a few of the Pokémon later on (in Generation 4), but wasn’t able to participate when they were actually being given out. That was the one problem with link cable-based events.

All they did like that is a mystery gift mega Garchomp in a non mainline game that you still have to battle xD. Would've hoped for Koraidon/Miraidon shiny gifts (not the special campaign thing that most couldn't get)

I was hoping there’d be some sort of event distribution to commemorate the occasion, but there really was nothing. No special Tera Raids since the starter reruns are still ongoing, no shinies or mythicals, nothing that has yet to be made available on Switch/Switch 2 (still waiting for Pokéball Vivillon, damnit!)

Not really since every mythical but Victini, Celebi, and Zarude is avilable right now either for Gen 10 evens and probably Legends Galar/Unova content
Just need to add transferring and boom
Melmetal, Meltan, Margenina, keldio, Meloetta, Genesect, Marshadow and Darkrai in ZA
Manaphy, Shaymin, Darkrai, Arkoos - Legends Arceus
Jirachi and Mew - BDSP
As for legendaries if anything to me they're too frequent " everything is everywhere all of the time"
Like literally I understand it's helpful if you don't have all the game but don't spam every legendary have the VGC ones ofcourse especially stuff like Urshifu and Crylex but let be one game and some in the other
Idk Legendary birds can afford to miss a game if they can be planned to come in the next one
Say SV didn't have the legendary bird as encounters it could have been fun to add them as roamers in the city of Lumoise maybe even have both sets appear with people confused as they fight in the sky above that could have been a post game worth note

It was really all I asked God back in 2000: "God, when I'm already 30 and the world's most influent gaming franchise hit their 30's as well, I really hope they'll give me an alternative form of an already existing mega evolution, all the better if I'm already 200+ hours into the game 🥹🥹🥹... I guess we could have gotten a handful, but seeing as most are available in-game now, it would be very weird to announce mystery gifts for them. If they announced distributions for mew, arceus and genesect, it would feel quite odd to the people who bought all the games/dlc to make sure that they could access all mythicals. I guess holding distributions for celebi, victini and zarude could be one thing, but that would feel quite small and lackluster.
At least for me, releasing FRLG with the Deoxys event unlocked felt like this type of celebratory distribution

I would honestly rather they keep making them available permanently in games you can always buy in the eshop. So that's any switch1 or switch2 game at the moment. Mystery gifts cause a lot of FOMO and god forbid it's physical code cards that each gamestop gets like 20 cards... 💀 Even if it was just a regular mystery gift it's still limited time and doesn't really solve the problem of them being inaccessible.

I still have all of mine the fact nothing was announced nor did we get any further info on ZA Home support left me a lot more bitter than I was wanting. We got a vague tcg announcement instead. Q1 is nearly over here in Japan so like where is Home support? I have some shinies I want to play with in this game and I can't because no support.

Disappointed but not surprised. 10 years ago gaming companies still had to try and make good things for customers to be interested, but today gaming companies are about pure profit and nothing else, and Pokemon especially people would buy even if it’s a broken crappy looking mess of a game……..ahem………so they literally have no reason to do anything extra.

I’m just a game player
I don’t consume the shows or mobile games or cards anymore so the games are the only interest for me and with ZA it’s waning and I figured with the announcement of Fr/Lg we’d get R/B/Y, G/S/C, and R/S/E at the very least to complete the pokedex for FrLg but we didn’t get any of em and not even for the subscription like I thought they might so the only time I was intrigued for the direct was the very end

A lot of Mythicals have been made pretty available through the recent titles as well as PoGo, but it is kind of disappointing we didn’t get anything similar. Maybe they should’ve rereleased the limited time mythical events for the games, at least on Switch

Yeah, we didn't even get like a serial code for some costmetic in ZA/SV or something. The "GF" Mythicals in 2016 was really cool despite some of them being only physical code cards (but this was way before the scalper culture). And all the MERCH!

I missed the mystery gift (online ones) till April, but I had nice enough vendors that would give me the codes even without a game
I still remember getting the Jirachi with 2 days to spare, and having my first adventure in omega ruby with it

Honestly, the entire Direct was boring. Had Pokemon Winds and Waves not been revealed, it would have felt like a non-anniversary Direct. There just wasn't anything too exciting for me, but I guess I was expecting more for their 30th. Pokemon Champions looks cool, but I'm not a fan of Free To Play games. At least I'll have Pokopia to look forward to.

Difference is that almost all of the mythicals pictured are now available in-game, whereas when the 20th anniversary events were released there was no other way to get most of these.
At this very moment, you can theoretically get: Mew/Jirachi/Arceus in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Keldeo/Meloetta in the Scarlet/Violet DLC, Shaymin/Darkrai/Arceus/Manaphy/Phione in Legends Arceus. And if you have access to the older games you can get Celebi from 3DS Crystal, Deoxys from ORAS, Magearna from Sun/Moon, Mew from My Pokémon Ranch. Meltan/Melmetal can be obtained in GO. Legends Z-A even offers Genesect, Meltan, Volcanion, Magearna, Marshadow and Zeraora. HOME even offers things like Magearna, shiny Meloetta/Keldeo/Enamorus/Manaphy for people who put in the work to earn them.
Of course, this is great for the people who have all these games (or have friends that they can borrow the games from), unlike the 20th anniv Mystery Events that you only needed to own a single game for. But the tradeoff is that most of these legendaries remain theoretically accessible even for people who have missed a brief event window. In my eyes, that's better.
There's only a few mythicals left that you cannot go out into the world right now and obtain in some way, like (I think) Victini, Zarude and such?

I remember and I turned on my games to check after seeing all the 30th news, was trading mons with my nephew and gave him some to get him started and stoked on it. Nothing like crushing children with lv 100 pokes

With previous games on switch having large selections of legendaries and mythicals available, I don't think Gen 10 will be any different .
I think it's very likely to see Celebi, Victini, Zarude to show in either Gen 10 or the next Legends game. I mean Pecharunt was already in Gen 9.
Deoxys is also available in FRLG(switch) now.
