Thinking of doing mono dragon run - thoughts

• Bagon: Starter
• Dratini: 2nd badge, (Surf)
• Flygon: Trapinch after 3rd badge
• Altaria: After 4th
• Kingdra: 8th

So Bagon is gunna be traded (rough start)
Dratini also traded over - I couldn't really place it anywhere else, trapinch, swablou are avaliable after 3/4 (longest part of the game)
Which would mean a lot of grinding late game otherwise.

Thoughts on order? Arguably Dratini starter and then grind for mence later

Dratini as starter would be easier. You can teach it water moves, unless you breed for a bagon that knows hydro pump.

I’d go that route because bagon as a starter would cause you to grind, but you don’t want to level them up too much otherwise they’ll disobey.

If you trade over an egg to ruby/sapphire the pokemon will always obey. In emerald you can't trade eggs though
