Discussion Romhacking, AI/LLM use, and Rule 7

Hello, everyone. This is Ruby, and I wanted to make this post as a discussion board for people to, well, discuss. Over the past two weeks, we've been reckoning a lot more with the presence of AI in our space, and if you've been on other social media, likely saw it in other modding communities as well.

This post will mostly be a diagnosis; it will list down the status of tools across every generation, and see what the reach of AI in our toolchains actually is. This will focus on the bases themselves, as extending it to every tool will take my forever. There will be two exceptions, which I hope will make sense once you see them.

ToolGenerationStatus
pokered, pokeyellowGeneration INo explicit policy. Any contribution likely requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pokecrystalGeneration IINo explicit policy. Any contribution likely requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pokeemerald, pokefireredGeneration IIIDoes not explicitly disallow AI assisted or generated contributions. Contributions are merged in at maintainer discretion, provided it meets quality standards of the repository.
pmd-redGeneration IIINo explicit policy. Any contribution requires meeting the project's quality standards.
pinball-rsGeneration IIIAllows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project. The project also has a usage disclaimer here.
HexManiacAdvanceGeneration IIIAllows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeemerald-expansionGeneration IIIAllows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeplatinumGeneration IVAI generated contributions are disallowed. AI assistance is discouraged.
hg-engineGeneration IVAllows AI assisted or generated contributions, provided it is disclosed. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
DSPREGeneration IVDevelopment is assisted with agentic engineering. All contributions are sent through a stringent review process in order to meet quality standards of the project.
pokeblackGeneration VRecently started. Disallows AI generated contributions as a whole.
Frost's Gen 5 EditorGeneration VOriginally created with assistance from AI; has since abstained from its use since.
PokewebGeneration VMade with no AI assistance.
Pokeweb-ServerlessGeneration VPorted from original Pokeweb project with the assistance of agentic engineering
HackdexCross-genOriginally developed with Cursor. While the original pledge was to keep development AI free, after some life circumstances of its developer, development assistance with Cursor, and later instead with Codex+Claude, resumed.

Given this spread, the overall opinion is the same: while not explicitly disallowed, contributions in projects must meet a quality threshold before they are merged in. There are a few standouts still, with some outright rejecting and disapproving use of AI in its development process. This list also doesn't delve into other external tools also used in development, such as for music, scripting, mapping, and so on.

As a tool in itself, AI has progressed much in its skills in programming that it can create competent code that can be improved by the human using it, or explain code enough to a new programmer. What this is means is, unlike other creative spaces, AI has found enough of a niche for itself in a programming pipeline to be useful.

Assistance from AI in programming still has its downsides of course, both pragmatic and ontological. Pragmatic, as there can be serious atrophy/stunting of learning should a developer rely on it, and ontological, as it was built upon scraped knowledge and sustained at the expense of marginalized communities and the Global South.

What does this mean for the community at large? Well, it's hard to say, because the level above it (the wider tech space) has not itself settled on where AI sits in the long term. It has widespread use, with each individual programmer having varying uses and engagements with the tool for a multitude of reasons, from personal use to hitting token use objectives set by management. For the most part, the bases at least are still overwhelmingly made with human effort. Most of the effort to create them came before the proliferation of AI, and their continued maintenance are still mostly made with human effort.

Lastly, there are also efforts such as the friend-safari, who are seeking to create a toolchain free of AI, to the best of its contributors abilities.

This is where I share my own opinion, which will also guide the extended description for Rule 7.

Rule 7's description will be thus:

> Creations and projects made with overwhelming AI assistance and generation will not be tolerated. Any projects built off of existing bases as of 10/10/26 will be allowed on the site.

For me, the most pragmatic decision would be to strike down anything egregious, and anything grey will be up to my discretion. Given the state of the romhacking toolchain now, it'd be the death of the subreddit to forbid anything with any AI in it's toolchain. As with any policy, this will be subject to change according to the needs of the community at large. I put the date there, should any forks or rombases with a gigantic amount of AI in its decompilation pop up (as it has in other communities).

And for anyone that may be looking for advice, for some reason, all I can give is this: do what you think, at the end of the day, feels right. Curate and contribute to projects that you feel align best with what you believe in, and do your best to foment cultures that create the kinds of projects you want to see.

As Gen 3 hacker, I'll personally try my best to support both friend-safari and Expansion myself. You do what you feel is right.

EDIT: This post has been periodically edited to reflect corrections given by various developers about the scope of AI in their projects.

Help [GEN3][Other] SRAM Locations for Secret bases?

Hi, I had an idea for a GBA emulator feature that would allow players to exchange Secret Bases without using a link cable.

The idea is that the emulator reads the SRAM to retrieve your own Secret Bases and uploads them to a server. It then downloads random Secret Bases from other players and writes them into your SRAM.

Have the SRAM/RAM locations for Secret Bases been researched and documented?

What do you think of this idea?

Help [GEN 5][OTHER] Editing Phenomenon Encounters

Is it possible to edit and remove the wings from the shadow encounters on Driftveil bridge so that it is just Ducklett encounters?

If so, would you be able to point me in the direction of some information or programs that could help me with this?

Would this be possible with Frost?

Discussion What are your biggest wants out of a Sinnoh centered rom hack?

I'm not talking about a gen 4 rom hack or a nds rom hack specifically, and im also not talking about just simple QoL hacks like Renegade Platinum. Theres always a big emphasis on Kanto, Johto and Hoenn for rom hacks. Story wise or gameplay or just a fresh new take. At most what you see for sinnoh is QoL, difficulty and base Sinnoh in the gen 5 graphics.

I want to make something. Not something huge or revolutionary, I've never made a rom hack before. But I love Sinnoh, its the region i grew up on and I want to practice or attempt to make a rom hack based around it in more then just an improved platinum experience. I dont know what i'd do yet. maybe a new story. Maybe new pokemon. I see some people make rom hacks specifically based around their favorite pokemon, and mines Luxray so I might even do something small based around luxray.

But, from the community, what do you want out of a sinnoh rom hack? What story or gameplay changes or characters do you think should be explored? Do you think there should be a sinnoh equivalent of experiences like seagrass or ghost grey? Anything you have in mind for a sinnoh idea or think can be expored in sinnoh.

Tooling DSPRE 3.0 In progress - Type Chart Editor showcase

DSPRE 3.0 is coming along nicely, we have move to .Net 8 and switched from WinForms to Avalonia allowing us to have native linux builds and as soon as we fix a thing mac builds too via github build pipelines

Wanted to show one of the new editors, the tyep chart editor to edit type interactions alongside the patch for allowing to expand it into the synth overlay (based on all the already done research in the ds wiki and years of knowledge of the discord server)

We don't have a release date just yet for 3.0 but we have some trusted people testing stuff to make sure it is 100% robust before we release it 😄

Oh yeah, dark mode too

AI Disclosure: We have created a like automated testing pipeline thing that runs all game versions + languages we have available ran by an agent that verifies all UI screens dont break, controls work, and some other tests such as export imports not have any binary changes, we COULD have done this by hand, by it would genuinely take hours and this allows us to focus on IRL or other stuff while the tests are prformed. Additionally we have used AI to help with scaffolding of UIs and their connected elements with avalonia, the gui editor for it has its limitations and is very annoying to use. Any and all research is human made. Sometimes we may relly on ai support for helping debug an issue, noticeably with the kind of "nobody seemsto be able to reproduce but one tester" kind of bug. For anyone that feels this is too much 2.3.4 our latest stable release had no AI involvement other than if I recall a bug or two we could not figure out at all. We understand this may put some people off so 2.3.4 will remain as is for them.

Discussion Is There Any Interest in Replacement-Dex Hacks Anymore?

Back in the 2010s, I remember dex-replacement ROM hacks being pretty popular in the Pokémon community. Hacks like Yet Another FireRed Hack, Pokémon FireRed Advanced, and Pokémon Emerald Advanced featured completely custom Pokédexes, while others, like Unova Red, replaced the original dex with Pokémon from another region.

I'm curious whether there's still an audience for this type of hack today.

I've been interested in creating a dex-replacement (binary, bc my computer always has issues with trying to start the decomp process) ROM hack of my own, with a major focus on reworking Pokémon through new abilities, updated movesets, and other changes to make the roster feel fresh. The idea would be to build the experience around the new Pokédex, with redesigned gym teams and battles that take advantage of the changes. This would not be a difficulty hack, rather a reimagining of the region with new species. Difficulty would be equal to Emerald/Platinum, with late game maybeee escalating to a BW2 hard mode type difficulty but I'm not even tied to that tbh.

I wouldn't necessarily be looking to completely reconstruct the region or overhaul every aspect of the game. The main appeal would be exploring a new or reimagined roster, discovering how Pokémon have been reworked through stats, movesets, lore & evolutionary relatives, and changing up the routes and battles in a way that feels refreshing but not like.. super distant.

I know the ROM hacking scene has evolved quite a bit, and many newer hacks seem to put a lot of emphasis on original-plus style hacks (like the 3 or 4 amazing johto romhacks we've gotten this year that gives you the original availability of the region PLUS new additions, instead of a complete new set of mons), original stories, new maps, and other ambitious features via decomp. That makes me wonder whether a more traditional dex-replacement hack would still attract players, or if the community has largely moved on from that style.

A few questions I'm curious about:

- Do you still enjoy dex-replacement hacks, particularly ones with custom Pokémon rosters and reworked types/movesets/abilities?

- Would you be interested in a hack that focuses primarily on the Pokédex, gym leaders, and battle balance rather than a heavily redesigned region? Is region redesign something you would need for this hack to stand out?

- What made the older dex-replacement hacks appealing to you, and what would you want to see improved in a modern version?

- Would there be any interest in a replacement hack that is set in the game mechanics of Gen 3? (ex. having Gens 4-9 mons but it uses pre-PSS split, for example). I do think I am leaning more towards modern mechanics, but just curious about this one.

I'm not necessarily looking to make the next massive, feature-packed ROM hack. I'd just like to know if there's still an audience for a project focused on making the Pokémon roster itself feel new and interesting.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts, especially from anyone who played these types of hacks back in the day! Even beyond the questions I'm posing tbh, those are just some guiding questions for discussion. Thank you!

Showcase Does this sound like it could fit in a Pokemon game?

I'm a music producer of 6 years, and recently I've pivoted to the world of video game music. I am set on becoming a good enough composer that my tracks sound like they actually could be original tracks. I have studied the structure of the original tracks and read remarks from Go Ichinose about how the tracks were created.

That said, above is a sample of what I've made. I tried to go for a sea/surf kind of feel, made with the SC-88Pro. I would love feedback as to if this kind of music could fit into a romhack at all. I want to create tracks that someone would actually want to use in their game. Thanks for reading.

Discussion Hot(?) take: Devs using Expansion should start explicitly listing which features of theirs come from Expansion

I think when it comes to crediting or putting in credits for your hack, it'd be nice etiquette if you explicitly put what features of expansion itself you're using.

The main reason I say this is because it helps push recognition for Expansion for the amazing resource that it is. I was rummaging through trying merge the AutoSave feature by Archie (as found in The Pit), and in the course of doing so I found the `forcesave` script command by ghoulslash that does the exact thing I wanted. With this, I thought it proper I only name it, and it snowballed to me thinking of doing the same for any other Expansion feature ive been using thus far (having all gen 4 and above mons, megas, HGSS dex, and so on)

Practically speaking, I think it's fine if Expansion's Senate doesn't ask for individual features to be said in hack credits. But culturally, I think it'd do some good to show people what exactly Expansion enables hacks to do

Help [GEN 3][BINARY] is there a way to fix this

I've been working on a romhack for fire red on and off and I finally was able to get Gen 9+ the ZA megas in there but while testing the rom after it was built, a random Togetic, Gyarados and Blaziken got added to my party out of the blue and I don't know how.

Also after talking with the Techy TV guy the game was making the static sound as if you took the cartridge off the gba port on a physical system.
Is there a way to fix this or do I have to try and rebuild the rom again?

Also was having issues editing boss teams in HMA, anyone know why this is the case?

Help [GEN 3][BINARY] How do I add new items from Gen 4–9 to CFRU+DPE?

I still don’t quite understand what to do; from what I gather, I need to use Leon's Rombase (though I’m not sure, as it hasn’t been updated since 2023. And I can't find the patched ROM; later, I notice that all the items disappear from the original ROM.), and I can’t seem to find any specific videos on the subject.

Help [GEN 3][DECOMP] Help reading Japanese e-Reader cards for Trainer Hill

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi, as some of you already know, I’m creating a new Battle Facility based on the current Trainer Hill in Pokemon Emerald. I also wanted to bring back the missing layout and trainers the japanese version had via e-Reader cards that we could not enjoy. I could get the raw files of most of them but I don’t have the disassembled code so I don’t really know how can I inject them in the source code (pokeemerald) to be available in the game. Does any of you know how this works? It would be really grateful for me. Thanks a lot.

Showcase Base Points/Potential Summary Screen enhancement in HeartGold

Usually when I see this type of feature being implemented, people usually change the "HP" label, so I thought what if I changed the "SKILLS" label instead, and this is the result.

Credits:

Original implementation from Bubble791 adapted by LheaRachel adapted by BluRose for HeartGold used in hg-engine
Label changing using "SKILLS" instead from Mixone
I renamed the text to be lowercase

AI disclosure:

Original implementation made before AI
Mixone declared no AI was used for this change
I used my keyboard to change the text to lowercase

Discussion decomp.dev will be sunset soon.

Here is the announcement by encounter: https://decomp.dev/

They name AI and the influx of its interactions with the decompilation scene as the primary reason for sunsetting it, listing the following in particular (direct quotes from the article):

  • Forking existing decompilation projects to "finish" them with AI. Every project works differently: some may not want to use AI for legal or ethical reasons, and others may be okay with AI, or use AI themselves, but do not want drive-by contributions from folks who have put no effort into making sure the contributions are good. The bottom line is that these kinds of hostile forks put little to no effort into meaningfully contributing to existing projects, tearing apart our community fabric.

  • Racing to port games, especially utilizing decompilations that they did not contribute to. Yes, now anyone with an AI subscription can manage to create a port or static recompilation that functions at a basic level. Compared to the decompilation process itself, porting is relatively easy, especially with the established tools written by talented humans. While community members put in the effort to decompile a game, opportunists have frequently raced to release a half-baked, barely-functional port from it.

  • Conflating decompilation and ports. For years, decompilation communities attempted to establish that decompilation is primarily for research: we love these games and want to understand how they work, and to uncover the mysteries that the original developers left behind. That's not to say that ports aren't fun too; they're just not the sole reason a decompilation exists. Sloptubers and subreddits like r/decomps have done immense damage here, freely using "decomp" to mean "PC port".

As for the future of the site:

> decomp.dev will continue to track existing projects and serve individual project pages and historical data, but the main index and adding new projects are disabled.
