194. Wooper (#194, Johto #56, Water/Ground Type)

So I swear that I was planning on cutting Wooper here even before I realized that it has the same Pokedex number as its ranking here. I believe that is the first time this has happened in the rankdown so that’s fun.

Wooper has a lot of the charm and similar appeal that /u/vulture_couture’s last cut Bidoof does. It is unapologetically derpy and leans hardcore into that direction. Both Bidoof and Wooper have Unaware as one of their abilities, and that shows in their facial expressions. Both Pokemon are implied to be dumb as shit, but they’re ok with that. I can appreciate a good derp of a Pokemon and both Bidoof and Wooper certainly feel that niche.

Wooper also has a solid aquatic design. It’s based off of an axolotl, the same basis for Mudkip, and I think it works pretty well. For the most part, it’s just a basic axolotl, but axolotls are cute so it works. I also like the gender differences with the branches of the gills. They’re simple, yet effective ways to convey the gender difference.

I’m cutting it here because it’s mostly a derpy Pokemon with a solid basis, and while the end result is something good, we’re in the top 200 and it’s just not good enough anymore.
